I wrote this essay for @972mag about the bodily feeling of freedom of expression — what it meant to feel my identity celebrated abroad, two years into the genocide, after decades of repression and self-censorship.
For Palestinians in Israel, self-censorship has long been a survival mechanism, our silence the condition of our citizenship. But encountering solidarity abroad, I realized my body forgot what it feels like to speak freely.

🚨🚨 happening now: Israeli soldiers are surrounding a Palestinian family in Beit Furik, while an Israeli soldier threatens to open fire on them if they move as they harvest olives.

Israel’s election, despite party nuances, is largely a battle between different right-wing approaches for a state that has consolidated control between the river and the sea. That raises complex questions about what we can expect to change — and what will likely stay the same. 🧵

Israel has deliberately transformed the Palestinian olive harvest into a war zone, where occupation soldiers and settlers wage an organized campaign of terror against Palestinian farmers on their own land.
And the world continues to turn a blind eye.
The forced displacement of Palestinians, repackaged as voluntary migration, is being openly sold as an electoral promise in Israel.
Ben-Gvir points at airplanes and talks about putting Palestinians on board. “More and more,” he says,

Her name is Mariam Ghanem. She is two and a half years old.
At 4 a.m. today, she watched her mother being consumed by flames following an Israeli strike.
Mariam miraculously survived the strike. Her father was slaughtered by Israel just a few months ago.

Israeli authorities have demolished an entire unrecognized Bedouin village near Rahat in the Naqab/Negev, displacing roughly 400 residents. Despite ongoing negotiations over alternative housing arrangements, bulldozers tore down every home in the community.

The Israeli occupation army has uprooted hundreds of olive trees from farmland in the town of Kafr Malik, northeast of Ramallah, destroying farmers’ hard work and a vital source of their livelihood.
The “anti-Netanyahu” camp is campaigning against Netanyahu, who has a genocide under his name, by portraying him as too supportive of Palestinian statehood.
Palestinian self determination is a political liability in Israeli electoral politics.

A searing account in @972mag of torture of Palestinian children in Israeli custody.
“Children [in administrative detention] often don’t even know why they’re being held, and their parents don’t know either.”

What has 3 years of unprecedented global debate and international condemnation of Israel actually changed on the ground?
Israel continues to indulge in impunity.
Gaza: live broadcasted genocide continues.

The chutzpah you find in Israel (enabled by decades of impunity): I searched for the Palestinian documentary NAZA and got “NAZA: The Real Story” instead.

Averbuch says they distributed their film as if it were a leaked version of @yuval_abraham & Rachel’s NAZA, so people searching for the original film would find theirs.
He calls the strategy “network warfare” and “offensive hasbara.” arielforisrael.com/post/naza…

Today Israeli terrorist settlers have set fire to hundreds of olive trees in Deir Sharaf, west of Nablus in the West Bank.
The Jewish Israeli settler Yosef Haim Ben-David, who kidnapped and burned alive my 16-year-old cousin Mohammad Abu Khdeir in 2014, died today in prison, where he was serving a life sentence for Mohammad’s murder.
Mohammad should be 28 years old today.

Israel has a Ministry of Settlements. A minister. A state budget. Staff. Annual plans. Government decisions.
It would be convenient to sanction the “settlement enterprise” without sanctioning Israel. But where, exactly, does the UK imagine one ends and the other begins?
