Inspired by a @kimmaicutler tweet, I proposed we repurpose parts of downtown for classrooms and student housing … and everyone seems to like the idea.
Now some smart people are running with it:

Consummate professional, devoted collaborator, lovely and gentle man, loyal friend. Could go on, but no, I can't go on. This is gutting. And way, way, way too soon.

If proximity to transport is what we should optimize for, then why wouldn't we zone to allow hotels along the entire BART and Muni transit corridors?

Remote work didn't kill offices. And remote work won't kill cities.
If there are empty offices and empty parts of the city it's because they were always dependent on miserable commutes.

"Primarily due to the combination of wildfires, drought, and drought-associated beetle epidemics, 30% of the [California Sierras] region's conifer forest extent transitioned to non-forest vegetation during 2011-2020."
This paper is mega-depressing for anyone who loves the Sierra. But it also points to the reality that we face a stark choice - either we intervene to save what is left or we lose it on a rapid timeframe. There is no "no action alternative" anymore.
