A good benchmark for progress in AI is the changing discourse amongst Handmade programmers: it's absolute slop > it's just a bullshitting engine > what have you built though > it can't compete with industry veterans > I like the tactile feeling of pressing keys on my keyboard.
C is the PDF of programming languages.
I don’t trust Anthropic’s models and don’t understand how people are using them productively. Fable has been especially disappointing in the problem domains I’m working in, namely projects with hard real-time requirements where the quality bar is set very high, and is constantly making “compromises” it thinks are on-beam, just failing to complete tasks outright, wrapping up with an impenetrable novel about what it thinks is broken, etc. Sol/Astra rarely went/goes wrong.
In the near future, politeness norms will include wearing noise-cancelling earbuds in public places so that everyone can talk freely with their agents. Abstainers will be considered a nuisance, corrosive to social harmony, in the company of street photographers and streamers.
Japan is really made up of two countries: Tokyo, and Japan. Reminded of this on recent trip to Nagoya, which is noticeably less well maintained. Tokyo’s huge population acts like a forcing function to keep everything well maintained. One small inconvenience affects millions.
Replying to @steveinpursuit
What also puzzles me is that the infrastructure of this giant city is so well maintained. As soon as an escalator breaks it is fixed immediately. You never see "out of order" signs on train doors etc. Keeping this intricate clock running meticulously is pretty insane.
As good a time as ever to reread Crystal Society.
Got my iPad Pro expecting to read on the thing, but couldn't find a single reading app that came close to slash surpassed paper. Spent the last year building a source-neutral infinite* reader app that actually lets you read like Adler intended. Things are finally shaping up (:
