The hockey community is mourning the loss of Riley Vander Esch, who passed away at just 21 years old after a courageous battle with brain cancer. A Sioux Falls, South Dakota native, Riley was preparing for her senior season as a goaltender with Saint Mary’s University. She was also studying Sports Management and Accounting and had previously helped the Sioux Falls Flyers capture a state championship in 2022. Those who knew Riley remember far more than the athlete. She was a teammate, student, daughter, friend and an important part of every community she represented. Our deepest condolences go out to Riley’s family, friends, teammates and everyone at Saint Mary’s and in Sioux Falls during this incredibly difficult time. The Vander Esch family has encouraged anyone wishing to honor Riley to support the organizations and programs that meant so much to her. Sticks out for Riley. 🏒❤️
