#Whalefall is GREAT at establishing confinement, but there wasn’t enough desperation or urgency to match the stakes. Even when the tension falls short, the filmmaking sells the claustrophobia through tight framing and rattling sound design. Ultimately, it is a gripping concept elevated by a surprisingly tender story. The trouble is that the emotional material overshadows the fight for survival. Almost like the life death portion was an afterthought. That said, without that added layer to the story, I strongly believe the movie would’ve been running on fumes.Ā  But… it came at the expense of what should’ve been the film’s biggest strength. Take 47 Meters Down, for example. One thing that movie does well is constantly reminding you how little oxygen the characters in peril have left. Whereas here, we get maybe two or three reminders at most. That’s what this one was missing.Ā  Furthermore, the survival aspect also suffers from some questionable plot armor.Ā  There’s a sequenceĀ in the second act when the main character is… let me just say… is brought to a deep part of ocean.Ā  A far more promising idea in theory than it is in practice. This doesn't surprise me at all. The movie has absolutely no appeal for non-cinephiles. The movies marketing is based entirely on borrowed trust. Otherwise it's just "Hey look Tom Cruise is wearing a bunch of make up and holding a shovel in a weird way. Want to buy a ticket?"
Tom Cruise's DIGGER pre-sales keep going down and may bomb even harder than we projected days ago. How bad? It might even miss the double digits. Right now, it’s tracking to be Warner Bros biggest bomb of the decade with a $9M-$12M debut on a $180M budget.

A lot of potential left unrealized.Ā  I kept waiting for #Primetime to make all of its ideas and story threads amount to something. That never happened.Ā  It had me continuously asking myself… where is this actually going? Why does this matter in grand scheme of things?Ā  Almost all of the subplot threads are lightly explored. They kind of just felt there to be there. So most of my experience felt stationary because I never felt like there wasĀ enough momentum building up. That’s what made Primetime so frustrating for me. I could see the movie I wanted it to be, but it doesn’t come together in the end. It’s fine. It’s good-ish. I wanted it to be more than it ended up being. Full review: youtu.be/iFVTroF5OGA?is=WIqI…

Here we go again… hyperbolic word of mouth. What else is new? šŸ˜‚ A MARVEL movie giving people heart attacks? Come on people. I’ll continue keeping my expectations where they are and wait for something more substantial than a loosely reported insider claim. We’ve all seen how quickly hype can get out of hand before a movie even comes out.

Kept kneecapping its best horror chops with jokes that suck the tension right out of the room. Most of my experience with Cregger’s #ResidentEvil was fine. It’s a competent, mildly entertaining experience, butĀ one that never pulled a strong reaction out of me. I dug how the 90-minute runtime plays out almost in real time. It gives the film a seamless, continuous feel that complements its survivalist nature. The creature design is another highlight. Very John Carpenter’s The Thing inspired, along with 3 good jump scares that got me really good.Ā  However, just when the horror element started gaining momentum, the film would suddenly hit the brakes and pile on the comedy instead of letting those moments breathe and shine. Easily Cregger’s weakest effort to date. Granted, I’m someone who didn’t play the video games or watch the previous films in this franchise. So there’s not much else for me to base my opinion on besides how I experienced this one. Ultimately, your mileage with this one comes down to one thing: how much comedy are you able to tolerate in a horror movie? As for me, I seem to be in the minority that isn’t loving it, so you should still give it a shot. Full review: youtu.be/wJVH8Wa57As?is=01q7…

The John Carpenter influence is strong with this one. And being a fan of his catalog, I seem to be enjoying #Onslaught more than most. You can see little pieces of The Fog, Escape from New York, Halloween, and They Live throughout, almost like Carpenter’s greatest hits got thrown into a blender and given a modern makeover. Biggest compliment I will award this movie is THE MUSIC!Ā  Gosh I wish more modern filmmakers put this much emphasis on rather than having it playing underneath it. Unfortunately, everything else feels razor thin and undercooked. I wanted more time with these characters and substance underneath all the style. Even the mother daughter dynamic fell flat.Ā  Besides Adria Arjona, almost all the other had me asking, ā€œOkay so what’s this person’s importance to story?ā€ only for the film to leave you hanging. So I completely understand why some people are calling this one of the most disappointing movies of the year.Ā  A lot of what it establishesĀ ultimately goes nowhere. But I couldn’t shake those Carpenter hues and undertones, and maybe that’s my bias talking. I’m willing to admit that. If you’re going into Onslaught looking for a straightforward popcorn flick with cool action, it delivers on that front.Ā  Just don’t expect much beyond the surface.

A humble little slice of pie. #Tony is nothing revolutionary, but there’s something admirable about its simplicity.Ā  It’s pretty smooth to take down. All thanks to its grounded and refreshingly unpretentious approach. So I enjoyed what was on the plate, but I couldn’t help wishing it had that one extra ingredient to make it a truly knockout dish. What I think it is that the deep dive on Bourdain was surface level.Ā  And the things I was most interested in, such his relationship with food, how he discovered his passion for cooking, and what was happening beneath the surface are mostly teased rather than authenticity explored. I honestly wouldn’t have minded another 15-30 minutes. The resolution also didn’t feel like the right place to end.Ā  There was clearly more story to tell, especially when it came to Anthony’s relationships with the people around him. Ultimately, Tony does have anything I am outright mad at. My pushback comes more from what it leaves unexplored than anything it gets wrong, if that makes sense?

Scratched an itch I didn’t know I had. #Buddy tapped into a childhood nostalgia I didn’t even realize I was still holding onto in my subconscious.Ā  Growing up on Bear in the Big Blue House and Barney, the twisted late ’90s/early-2000s children’s TV aesthetic just hit different. The singing.Ā The dancing.Ā The ā€œmake me feel like I’m five againā€ energy.Ā  Once I got acclimated to its wavelength, I was intoxicated. Those 20 minutes of watching the three episodes play out were the best part of the entire movie. And @Buddy_The_Uni himself surprised me by having depth to him.Ā The orange unicorn isn’t just a gimmick.Ā  Bro just wanted hugs and to be loved. Also appreciated how the film handles its violence toward children. Even when things get bloody, it maintains such an upbeat, playful tone that the violence feels more absurd than gratuitous. I was giggling quite a bit. Unfortunately, the movie loses its magic whenever it leaves Buddy’s world. The Cristin Milioti real world storyline never grabbed me in the same way. And I adore her as an actress. She’s also one of my biggest celebrity crushes. So I was always waiting to get back to the weird orange guy. The film starts SO SO strong. Put me in a trance. But once that shift happens, it never quite reaches that same high again. Specifically, the resolution is where it loses the most points for me, as there isn’t a particularly satisfying payoff, andĀ it’s not my favorite when movies leave me with more questions than answers. Still, Buddy is one of the most creative and genuinely fun movies I’ve seen this year. The more I think about it, the more I like it.Ā  And that Buddy song… I can’t be the only one who can’t get it out of my head. Full review: youtu.be/N1bLxlD3a70?is=_nFn…

Pshhh. A character he’s only played once, fueled by recency bias, as opposed to one that revived his acting career and rewarded him with so many lump sum paychecks. Give me a break.

I ranked EVERY #SpiderMan film from WORST to BEST... and with great movies comes great responsibility. šŸ•·ļø From Tobey Maguire to Andrew Garfield, Tom Holland to Miles Morales, Spider-Man has had one hell of a run on the big screen. There are highs, lows, controversial sequels, multiversal madness, and somehow... a whole lot of movies I still love. Narrowing them all down into one definitive ranking was NOT easy. And I already know there are going to be some placements that make you want to throw me off a building šŸ˜‚ But hey... that's part of the fun. šŸ‘‡ Drop YOUR Spider-Man ranking in the comments. I read every one and can't wait to debate it with you. youtu.be/-BreUpsbpIE?is=zrkg…
