Finally had time to make a video about the workshop the 8yo, 5yo and I ran in the family area at EMF festival
We ran a Robot Unicorn Joisting workshop at EMF festival using 3D printed versions of the Unicorns from the Smartibot kit.

I designed a new street thing last year, and I’ve seen a few of them out in the wild now so I figured it was time tell you all about it! It’s a support for temporary road signs. It’s made from recycled plastic and replaces a steel A-frame and sandbag. 🧵1/

I've published a more detailed write-up about the Highway Sign and its development on my website rossatkin.com/wp/?portfolio=…

Some Swedish friends wanted to have Swedish mind summer party on the common. We weren’t going to dig a hole for the Swedish Maypole, so used a Highway Sign base (with a custom 3D printed socket) to hold it up. It worked really well. Most pagan thing I’ve been involved with so far

Last night we won a National Transport Award for the Street Accessibility Tool we developed with @cityoflondon! If you want to use it to assess the accessibility of your streets it’s here: cityoflondon.gov.uk/services…

Our project did not win in the research category . But @TfL did win the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Award for their Night Time Assessments for Women’s Safety and the Making the Case for Bus Investment research project is one that will hopefully have a big positive impact!

Info on the project we were nominated for on the impact of colourful crossings on disabled people is here. I’m happy it’s led to @TfL not being installed anymore but sad that they haven’t looked for less sensitive places to inject art into the streetscape rossatkin.com/wp/?portfolio=…

To celebrate the centenary of Sir David Attenborough tomorrow I made this 3D printed Duplo compatible figure of him and the children built him an African savannah scene. Link to download the file in the next tweet. #ATTENBOROUGH100

A lot of access still works on a “just ask” system. Keys behind counters. Ramps that staff have to unlock. Entrances that require someone to notice you first. What is the most ridiculous “accessible” setup you have seen? #AccessibilityMatters #DisabledVoices #DisabilityRights

I helped out with a hackathon about assistive tech and AI and I made a pointing device to help blind and partially sighted people navigate using a #Smartibot board. Combined with the (8 year old) AI in the app it worked surprisingly well allowing Chris to follow me through space

[ALT: Chris is holding a gun shaped thing and a phone and is able to follow me as I take a winding route through a big space] Here's a video where you can better see the setup. With better AI this could be quite useful. You can read more about it here: rossatkin.com/wp/?portfolio=…

[2nd video ALT: A phone and a purple gun shaped thing are passed from side to side in front of a small cardboard cutout of a person. On the phone screen the person has a green box around them. A tactile pointer on the top of the gun shaped thing moves to track their position]

to understand the state of robotics, all you have to pay attention to is the lack of demos of robots playing musical instruments. you can safely ignore all backflip demos. acrobatics RL is far easier than i.e. playing guitar which *needs* good touch feedback just like most tasks

Great to see different parts of the political spectrum come together to appreciate street furniture!
Such a tiny thing - but so massive. Next time you walk around Trafalgar Square notice how the streetlights look like the one on the left. Then imagine how the surroundings would feel if they were replaced by the one on the right?

Enjoy @ahussein and I gradually turning into middle aged geezers over the last six years of meeting up when he’s in London.

Met up with @RubySteel and had a lovely chat about user-centred and inclusive design. We realised it was almost 10 years since we started making #biglifefix ⏳

The three key changes they highlighted, which they wouldn’t have done if they hadn’t been using the tool, were the full tactile delineation of this level surface (necessary because of the Lord Mayor’s Show) with Blister and Corduroy paving

…as well as the introduction of 60mm kerbs where there would have been an undeliniated level surface here. AND the increase in spacing between the security bollards from 1.1 to 1.4m to better accommodate wider mobility aids, in particular adapted cycles

The second (and final) of these free training sessions on our street accessibility tool is tomorrow. The first went really well and it was great to hear from @cityoflondon officers how its use changed aspects of Bank Junction. Details in the thread if you want to come along👇
We’re running free training in how to use our new improved street accessibility tool at the Guildhall in London this Friday and next Tuesday. It’ll include a case study on how it was used at Bank Junction. Open to anyone who works in street design. More details in the thread.👇

This street accessibility training is tomorrow but there are still a few places if you want to come. Also the tool is now at its permanent home on the @TransportForAll website. Link in the following tweet.

I made a new thing 🧵 Working with @TransportForAll we have built an even better spreadsheet for analysing streets (actual or being designed) and showing their likely accessibility for different disabled people. It’s free to download and use.
