Things just happen to be as they are, but we want to build them into a pattern, laid down by the structure of our language. So strong is this habit, that we tend to deny reality to what cannot be verbalized.

Yeah. Finmin has really screwed up, and the govt is screwing up too. What you're also seeing as a citizen is: 1. Corruption all around and increasing power of a few entities. 2. Party in power cares only for election results, not national interest 3. Extractive taxation policies and increasing complexity in doing business. 4. Zero accountability among ministers and bureaucrats. 5. Massive uncertainty in and irrationality of govt policies. They've gone full UPA2 on us. Additionally given the geopolitical environment, businesses are not focusing on capex. This quarters earnings and forecasts are going to point towards a dire scenario

My strongest “vibes not evidence” belief is that remote work is a cancer that’s making (most) people miserable even though it seems better in the short term.

If Your Flight Attendant is Posh Your Country is Poor Manu Joseph I GET a spam call from a girl who asks which bank has issued my credit card, and I say, “Sperm Bank.” She asks if it is a foreign bank, then for the spelling. Listening to her, I am delighted at the progress the nation has made. I am not being sarcastic, partly because sarcasm is the second lowest form of humour, but chiefly because her response is a good omen. substack.com/home/post/p-212…

The phone rings, you pick it up and then you hear a dial ring at the other end, as if you called them, and then answer and try to sell you shit you never asked for. This has got to be the most disingenuous way of endearing to your prospect.

We’re not a serious country. Everything is just a cringe performative act
The President has assented to the #VandeMataram Amendment, passed without discussion in Parliament, which requires the singing of the National Song in full at the start and ending of any official function, in addition to the National Anthem. As one who greatly respects both, and can sing the first two stanzas of the former (but not the other four, which were never required till now) as well as the entire anthem, i would like to point to just one practical consideration our zealots appear to have overlooked: human nature. "Jana Gana Mana" requires audiences to stand respectfully and focus their attention for a reasonable 52 seconds. The National Song in full takes 3 minutes and 10 seconds. Tamil Nadu has just decided that both will be preceded by the State Song in Tamil for another 2 minutes. Do we really expect audiences to stand still and respectfully for six minutes before and after every function, a total of 12 extra minutes? Can respect and patience be legislated? I fear that the intent of the Bill, to promote greater respect for the National Song , will not be achieved, but its opposite may well be....

Completely agree with the view that “entrance exams” have done more damage to education & society than their utility in allocating seats. India must rethink their role. People can’t imagine an alternative, but there can be many if we put our minds to it.
Before we get into making a safe examination system, @NandanNilekani must examine the need for any entrance exam. Most exams are territorial power centres and business opportunities. Take for example CUET. It is the most unnecessary examination Imposed on the hapless Delhi students that made the CBSE scores useless and killed school education. This was done to neutralise the AAP investment in government schools a waste. These kids cannot afford private coaching and a state topper is also denied a seat. Similarly, NEET is useless for those who want to join a private medical college. The price differential (5 lacs and 1.5 crores) is so huge that at rank 30,000 all government colleges close their admission while even at rank 13 lac, private colleges are unable to fill seats. Private colleges are reserved for the rich 1% of India. If you indeed fighting against reservation and for meritocracy, shouldn’t you include this? The TET, even JEE advanced, UGC NET etc can be modified to make it a test for those who don’t cross a certain level of education. We must reduce the entrance exams. We must reduce the number of students who should take the exam. Increase the eligibility. For Ex: Make 80% in boards a qualification to get into all India institutions like AIIIMS, IITs etc. Make school education mandatory. Punish those in dummy schools. Hedge. De-risk. Spread. Make sure that a 3 hour exam doesn’t become the life altering exam. It will reduce stress. Reduce suicides. The business of entrance exams has to be reformed before we reform the conduct of such exams.

I feel bad for this person but this is like arsonists expecting the fire they lit to not harm them. For 12 yrs these channels profited from rage & rioting & lies.. it is a weird entitlement to expect none of it to come back at you. #GodiMedia
Dev Kotak, a reporter with Times Now, was attacked by protestors at Jantar Mantar. It's absolutely unfair. Having covered the @Cockroachisback protest for days now, this unruly behaviour towards some channels is uncalled for. A reporter is not at fault. This is unacceptable.

Another reminder that most "tech problems" in our country have nothing to do with tech. We are terrible at building human capacity and accountability systems
Before you read this article, grab a glass of water and a paracetamol. Walk over to your laptop—the supercomputer in your hand is not up to the task—and see if you can figure out how to apply online for an Indian visa. We’ll wait economist.com/asia/2026/06/2…

A 19-year old broke into India's largest high school examination system of 2M+ students a year, the CBSE, and was able to view and CHANGE any students' marks. He responsibly wrote to the team 3 months ago, and it took them 3 days to fix only one of the issues. Today, they took the entire website down. This is a absolute embarrassment. The futures and lives of millions rests in the hands of the utterly incompetent. There is also no mass media reporting on the matter. This topic is close to me because not only is this the education system I went through, but 12 years ago and silently for 5yrs since, I'd written about and reported a much less severe vulnerability allowing me to scrape these results too. More than a decade later, not much has changed. This 19yo, Nisarga Adhikary, wrote a great piece outlining each vulnerability he reverse engineered: - the master password leak - the client-side 2fac / OTP validation workaround - tokenless access to the entire internal app (dashboard, evaluator details, etc) setting dummy browser values - changing any password without knowing the old one - an IDOR vuln allowing you to act as any user and edit exam marks For those interested in a beautiful study in security breaches, this is a must read (link below). If there's any light at the end of the tunnel, it's that a 19yo who never went to college can do things 99% of top engineers couldn't figure out.

Friendly reminder, Hinton is the same guy who told us this: "We should stop training radiologists now. It's just completely obvious that within five years, deep learning is going to do better than radiologists.". That was six year ago. He was right about the AI. Wrong about the job. AI already reads scans better than any human. Six years after this nonsense prediction we have more radiologists. That's because Hinton and many others just fundamentally misunderstand that tasks are not jobs and that the job of a radiologist is also interacting with patients, being a light in darkness, providing hope and warmth and care and a thousand other things. Again we need to stop listening to these folks. I cannot say it enough, just because this fellow is brilliant with AI does not mean he has any clue how it will impact society. None. Zero.
Geoffrey Hinton on AI's job loss: History’s tech revolutions replaced one job with another. e.g. Tractors replaced farm jobs with factories & office jobs. But AI will break that cycle, because AI can replace both physical+intellectual labor.

Brigadier VK Joshi, 70, served the Army for three decades, survived war and multiple counterinsurgency operations, but lost his life to a stray bullet in a pointless clash between a group of urban dehatis. A Delhi-registered Fortuner overtook a Scorpio N on Mussoorie Road in Dehradun, which hurt the ScorpioN occupants ego. The ScorpioN occupants gave chase. When the Fortuner didn’t yield, the ScorpioN group of urban dehatis pulled out a pistol and started firing. At that very moment, Brigadier Joshi was out on his morning walk. A bullet from that reckless exchange found him. His friends rushed him to the hospital, but he was declared dead on arrival. A life of service ended by someone else’s arrogance. As far as the urban dehatis are concerned, I'm sure they'll be out on bail in no time.

After much reflection, I have decided to resign from my position as Director of the National Counterterrorism Center, effective today. I cannot in good conscience support the ongoing war in Iran. Iran posed no imminent threat to our nation, and it is clear that we started this war due to pressure from Israel and its powerful American lobby. It has been an honor serving under @POTUS and @DNIGabbard and leading the professionals at NCTC. May God bless America.

At the banks of the Ganga in Patna, trash was once routine. Then Shubham Kumar chose to return home — and show up every Sunday. From a handful of volunteers to 1,100+ changemakers. 1.4 lakh+ kgs plastic cleared. 98% drop in thermacol. 16,000 livelihoods revived. From Ranchi to Varanasi — the movement grows. Because cities don’t transform overnight.
