You're looking at survivors of the the U.S. Army's 77th Division — aka the "Lost Battalion." More than 550 men of the unit stormed the Argonne Forest on this day in 1918. They were cut off, surrounded and relentlessly attacked for a week; fewer than 200 made it out.

In 1964, a 13-year-old student at London's Barbara Speake Stage School was hired as an extra for the Beatles' first movie, A Hard Day's Night. He was sent to the Scala Theatre and placed in the audience while the Beatles filmed their concert sequence. His job was simple: be one of the screaming young Beatles fans. When the movie came out, he looked for himself but couldn't find the footage. Thirty years later, producer Walter Shenson gave him the unused film from that day. He went through it until he finally found his 13-year-old self in the audience. The performance was "You Can't Do That," which had been cut from the finished film. The kid in the middle of this photo went on to have quite a music career of his own. That 13-year-old was Phil Collins.

Winter is coming! Early this morning, summit temperatures dipped just below freezing while in the fog, coating our tower instruments in a thin glaze of ice, allowing us to deice for the first time in months!

Germany's Bureau of Aircraft Accident Investigation says in an Interim Report that the downlock pin was missing in the June 4th Lufthansa 787-9 nose-gear collapse accident at Frankfurt Airport. Two technicians sat in the pilot seats were conducting a test to resolve an open complaint regarding the control system for the main landing gear doors at the time. During the test, the landing gear lever should be set to “UP”, among other things. At about 10:45 UTC, immediately after the landing gear lever had been activated, the nose landing gear retracted and the aircraft’s front fuselage impacted the ground. After the impact, the cockpit door slammed shut. At the same time, the power and the lighting went out. After the BFU consulted with the airport operator and the individual companies involved, a total of 34 individuals directly involved were identified. Twenty eight persons were in the airplane’s cabin. Five ground handling services members were outside the airplane, one technician was at the nose landing gear. There were 2 serious and 21 minor injuries. After the aircraft had been lifted up, the BFU documented that the landing gear downlock pin was not inserted into the designated hole on the nose landing gear and was not in the vicinity of the nose landing gear either. The nose landing gear was secured with the landing gear downlock pin found in the avionic compartment and the aircraft taken to a hangar for further examination.
