“Much of the room wants it to be 2016 again.”
Yes, Tim, because 2016 was one of the last great years of traditional AAA gaming. Titanfall 2, Battlefield 1, DOOM, Dark Souls 3, Dishonored 2, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, XCOM 2, and Uncharted 4 all came out that year
Back then, games were still largely products first, services second. Publishers competed to sell you a great game, not monetize every waking hour of your life with battle passes, rotating storefronts, daily chores, and an endless treadmill of artificial engagement
Games were allowed to have their own identities. Titanfall 2 didn’t need to be Fortnite. Battlefield didn’t need to be an extraction shooter. DOOM didn’t need a five-year seasonal roadmap. They were designed around distinct gameplay experiences rather than whatever monetization model executives like you are salivating over
And the technology was already good enough to deliver incredible visuals without development budgets spiraling into the hundreds of millions. Games could be ambitious without needing to become permanent revenue-generating platforms to justify their existence
Now we have an industry spending more money, taking longer, and producing fewer AAA games, while desperately chasing the same handful of commercially successful formulas. We’ve reached diminishing returns in graphical fidelity while sacrificing experimentation and creative diversity
And here comes Tim Sweeney, the man who ruined gaming with one of the biggest live-service platforms, lecturing people about how they need to move on from 2016
People aren’t asking you to bring back 2016’s technology, Tim. They’re asking for an industry that remembers how to make art instead of endless AI generated engagement slop
The fact that someone in your position apparently can’t tell the difference is a pretty good illustration of how we ended up here

Much of the room wants it to be 2016 again, but it's not. Our job, as the provider of tools and technology to much of the industry, is to design for the present that is and the future that will soon be. Personally I'm optimisic about it and see it as empowering for creators.

If you like Pokémon, perhaps I can introduce you to another turn-based RPG with switching out, deep stat analysis, field conditions, and a whole host of oddly named and shaped little guys to choose as your comfort character. That's right, it's Baseball.

Public transit is subsidized in virtually every city that has one on the planet because it has positive externalities like reduced congestion, lower traffic deaths, higher economic productivity.
Subsidizing public transit isn't bad.
*Why is the subway SO cheap in China’s big cities?*
Government subsidies.
Shanghai Metro lost an average of 2.5 yuan per passenger trip in 2017, and 5 yuan per trip in 2025.
Beijing Metro’s government subsidies have exceeded 25 billion yuan in each of the past five years; Shanghai Metro’s have run at around 15 billion yuan of subsidies, Southern Weekend reported.
This might change to a certain extent, starting from Shanghai, Beijing and Guangzhou this year.

We were so close to getting insanely affordable handheld PCs, low end phones with good specs and general good quality market saturation of solid tech.
All of it out the window. Thanks AI.
DDR5 RAM prices are getting ridiculous.
New pricing data from Germany shows the average price of DDR5 memory has climbed to almost five times the July 2025 level, August has been worse
The increase is steep: a 32GB DDR5-6000 kit that cost around €208 in July 2025 has recently approached €1,000 in Germany.
For a budget PC build, RAM could become one of the most painful upgrade costs. Prices may keep climbing if supply does not improve.

We own nothing. We own a PS download code. a Spotify subscription, a Netflix password, an MS Office license. Corporations are keeping all the power and they will weaponize it when the time is right.
PlayStation will stop releasing games on discs in 2028 bbc.in/3QUucA1

Remember when streaming took over cable TV? We were like, "Wow! Convenience and no commercials!" Then they slowly injected commercials back into it and took control of our viewing libraries. The convenience of digital gaming is going to follow the same pattern.

They told you you’d own nothing under communism. Now under capitalism you won’t even be able to own something as simple as your video games anymore.

You are killing ownership. You are killing legal preservation. You are killing discoverability. You are killing publishers. You are killing developers. This is a move that might slightly improve bottom lines, but tear down every other aspect of this medium. Well done! You f*d up!

I completely understand where you’re coming from, but for a lot of gamers physical discs are the only way they could afford to play games because they could get them secondhand. You can also give games to your younger siblings Which is a great way to introduce them to the games you were playing.
Most importantly though, as we saw from PlayStation this past week, if the media we buy is only digital, it can be taken away from us at a moment’s notice with no recourse. Imagine that, one day your entire library of games could be deleted overnight because technically you don’t own it.

Let's say the PS6 is a digital only console (pretty much guaranteed now) and 20yrs after it's release you wanna get a game for the PS6 but they've shut down the store just like they did for the PS3/Vita. What are you going to do?
You can't go to a gamestop, a pawn shop, a flea market, ebay or whatever. This is planned obsolescence in its' final form. PlayStation now has 100% control over how you buy and play a game.
Your boy wanna sell you a game for cheap? Can't do that, gotta buy full price on PSN. Wanna give your boy a game to check out? too bad, he's gotta buy it for $70 on PSN.
This is terrible for videogame preservation and consumer rights

Just curious, I am seeing people talk about doom and gloom for this but games are still releasing just digital. How is this bad for the future of consoles? Like I said just curious.
