Being a parent means trusting your child to make good decisions while also trusting the adults around them to do the right thing. Yesterday, that trust was completely shattered. My son went to spend time with friends at a house in Kent. Throughout the evening I checked in with him, and around 11 PM I saw that he was at a location he was not supposed to be! I called him and told him to come home and he told me the parent there would be bringing him home soon. At 11:30 PM, he said he was on his way. After that, my calls went unanswered for hours. As a patent, there are few feelings worse, than not having idea of where your child is or if they are safe. At 2 AM, my son finally arrived home intoxicated. I was beyond angry, disappointed, and heartbroken — not just because of the choices made by teenagers, but because an adult chose to allow it. An adult made the decision to provide a space where underage drinking was accepted instead of prevented. The next morning, my sister and I went directly to the home to address the situation. During that conversation, the homeowner admitted she allowed the underage drinking. Hearing those words from another parent was shocking. Our job as adults is to protect children, guide them, and create safe environments — not put them at risk. What upset me even more was realizing this wasn’t just about my child. Every young person in that house was someone’s son, someone’s daughter, someone’s entire world. The consequences of those decisions could have been life-changing for any of them. After leaving, we contacted law enforcement and filed a report. We later learned there had already been multiple calls and concerns associated with that residence. This post isn’t about revenge. It’s about accountability. As parents, we have a responsibility to protect not only our own children but the children entrusted to our care. I refuse to stay silent when a situation puts young lives at risk. My son made a mistake, and we will work through that together. That’s what families do. But one thing is certain: he will never step foot in that house again. Protect your kids. Ask questions. Know where they are. Trust your instincts. Sometimes being the “overprotective parent” is exactly what keeps your child safe.
