🚨#BREAKING: Outrage is erupting after a 22-year-old who runs into BURNING BUILDINGS as a volunteer firefighter was told he isn't qualified to be a paid firefighter...
...because he was HOMESCHOOLED.
Then the city changed the job posting to cover it up.
His name is Andrew Coates. He's 22 years old, in Nebraska.
Right now, today, he runs into burning buildings as a volunteer firefighter for Cedar Bluffs Fire. He is a state-licensed EMT.
He is doing the job. For free.
All he wanted was to get PAID to do it. In his words: "Make a career out of it would be the goal. To get paid to do what you love."
So he applied to the Fremont Fire Department.
And in April, the city rejected him. Why?
Because his high school diploma says he was homeschooled.
That's it. That's the whole disqualification.
Not his EMT license.
Not his fitness.
Not his record.
Not his experience pulling people out of fires ALREADY!!
...how he was educated.
The job posting he applied to said "graduation from high school."
That's all it said.
He graduated high school.
He has a diploma.
And AFTER they rejected him, the city went back and added the word "accredited" to the job description.
His own fire chief, the man who has watched Andrew work, showed up to defend him:
"I feel the city of Fremont is really missing out here, and in my mind, because of his homeschooling, you guys are discriminating against him."
Over THIRTY homeschool families showed up to stand behind this kid.
And the Civil Service Commission? They said it isn't their job to touch city policy.
Homeschoolers are literally a generation of kids who read ABOVE grade level, who work with their HANDS, who volunteer in their communities, who show up for their neighbors.
And this young man is the proof.
At 22, he's a certified EMT and a volunteer firefighter, while plenty of his peers are on a couch.
When your house is on fire at 3 a.m., I promise you will not ask the man dragging your children out where he went to high school.
You will not ask if his diploma was accredited.
You will thank GOD he came.
Andrew isn't even fighting for himself anymore. His words:
"I think now it's turned into we want to make sure that every homeschooler has an equal opportunity."
That's a better man than the policy that rejected him.
Fremont, you have a licensed EMT and an active firefighter begging to serve your city. And you turned him down over paperwork, then rewrote the paperwork to cover it.
Fix this.
Hire him!!!!!!!

AN ELEGY FOR OUR TIMES
My grandfather Albrecht von Blumenthal was captured by the French on 25th September 1915. He was in the foremost trench of a salient upon a salient. The greatest bombardment ever seen cut his platoon off from any possibility of reinforcements. Their ammunition ran out, as waves of Zouaves poured into the trenches. They threw hand-grenades at them before being overwhelmed. He was awarded the Iron Cross but this did not erase the deep sense of shame at his surrender and survival. Imprisoned at Corté on Corsica, he wrote the following poem on the day he arrived.
I find an eerie recognition of his feelings, when I contemplate the present political situation. Here follows my translation and below my grandfather's original in German:
In vain our hands press hard against the grating
That will not open; and our eyes in vain
Seek some escape. Our lot is bitter.
The soul can scarce refrain from cursing the spirit
That led it here. Heaven's thunderbolt
Has struck us all too hard; no longer, like the crusader,
On bended knee, do we gladly say:
“Blessed be it! It is the Lord's command.”
How long must we remain here captive?
The free spirit, too, is conquered in the end.
As a noble horse, tormented before the cart,
So does the human spirit flag when stripped of rights.
When day by day we gaze into the distance,
And no new word is woven into the familiar round,
The hour must surely come that breaks us:
Not heavily, but always with the selfsame weight.
And so we pray to Fate that it release us,

How did we get here?
- The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that 9.7% of children have received a COVID vaccine this year. 9.2% are not recorded as being at high risk of complications from COVID and thus are not eligible for COVID booster shots under Food and Drug Administration rules released under former FDA Commissioner Marty Makary. Makary resigned under pressure in May.
An FDA assessment conducted before his departure found that 10 children’s deaths may be attributable to the COVID vaccine. FDA career staff later revised that figure down using methods that a forensic pathologist who investigated two of the deaths said amounted to dishonest spin.
- Last month FDA authorized Moderna's mRNA flu shot under "accelerated approval," a pathway that's supposed to be for drugs treating diseases with few other treatments. Just six months ago, in February, Makary's deputy deemed the data so poor he swiftly returned the application to the drug company. Moderna had compared its new shot against a standard dose vaccine. But that's not the flu vaccine recommended for seniors, who are at highest risk of serious disease, for whom the CDC recommends a more powerful dose. The mRNA causes side effects at twice the rate of the traditional flu vaccine.
