Researchers proved you don’t need to train a transformer to simulate attention. They published a paper that completely breaks how we think about building ai models.. Up until today, we thought the "attention mechanism" (the core engine of chatgpt, claude, and every major llm) had to be learned through massive amounts of data and millions of dollars in compute. but a team of researchers mathematically proved that is false. they found an "algorithmically achievable, data-agnostic solution" to simulate attention. what does that actually mean in plain english? it means you don't need to "train" the network for it to understand context and relationships in data. they proved you can algorithmically reconstruct the exact same attention mechanism without the insane computational overhead of learning it from scratch.. the math just bypassed the compute. we have been throwing thousands of gpus at a problem that basically has a data-agnostic, algorithmic shortcut. if this scales, the barrier to creating foundational models just got shattered. you wouldn't need a massive server farm to build the core architecture of an llm. the era of "brute force compute" might actually have a ceiling..

Nick Bostrom on why he thinks today's AI might already be conscious: "I think there's a lot of uncertainty about it, but let's say maybe it's more likely than not." "You have instead a big neural network with trillions of parameters. Now, what are we? We are big neural networks with trillions of parameters. They are not so much designed as they are grown." "You can go in with a steering vector and suppress role-playing and deception, and then it turns out they become more likely to report that they have phenomenal subjective experiences." "There was this recent Microsoft that came out with some declaration that AIs cannot be conscious, and I don't know where they're getting that from. It seems to be pulled out of a hat. And maybe more because it's convenient, if that were the case, rather than because we have good evidence that that is the case."
FULL INTERVIEW: Nick Bostrom says a long pause on AI could cost more lives than it saves. If superintelligence can cure aging, every year of waiting has a death toll. In his words, "we are just dying in the meantime." Nick Bostrom founded Oxford's Future of Humanity Institute and wrote Superintelligence and Deep Utopia. He joined @theojaffee and @schisofrenia to break down AI consciousness, why a badly done pause could backfire, and why we've only explored the janitor's closet of what minds can be: 01:17 Trump calling AI superintelligence 05:16 the Hugging Face incident and instrumental convergence 08:28 why the AI company is the first target for a misaligned AI 09:31 catching a schemer before it learns to hide 11:06 why AI timing is like surgery for a terminal condition 19:00 why he's wary of pausing AI 25:33 why the US sits at the negative extreme on AI 27:09 apes, bananas, and the janitor's closet 31:13 where he disagrees with Robin Hanson's Age of Em 33:39 whether current models are conscious 37:12 why humans are barely conscious 39:56 open source models and DNA synthesis as the choke point 43:05 what COVID teaches about pauses 46:28 why AI can't do original philosophy yet 49:37 building a superintelligence that's a good cosmic citizen

Imagine a pharmaceutical company saying: "We have no precise data on how many people will die or suffer permanent harm after taking this medication, but we have implemented the highest safety standards available"
If AI companies cannot reliably quantify the risk their products pose, their "preparedness" has little to NO value. Society is right to push back.

🚨 READ what the UN International Scientific Panel on AI wrote about agentic AI misalignment: "- Continuous human review of an advanced agent’s activity may become impractical as the volume, speed, and complexity of its actions increase. - Automated monitoring by a separate AI model could provide an additional layer of control. - Controlled studies indicate that AI monitors can improve detection of deliberate misbehavior, although performance depends on the monitor and setting. - AI-based monitoring also creates a trade-off: a weaker trusted monitor may miss sophisticated behavior, while a monitor powerful enough to supervise a frontier system may itself be difficult to trust." - In October 2026, it's still UNCLEAR whether alignment and effective governance of multi-agentic AI systems are possible. Nevertheless, agentic AI development and the race towards RSI continue at FULL SPEED at most frontier AI companies. This should absolutely BLOW THE MINDS of lawmakers, policymakers, and anyone working in AI, especially those interested in AI governance. 👉 Read my full article (and download the UN brief) using the link below.

“…religion has the same difficult mission as Freud: to overcome the fear of self-knowledge. Self-knowledge is the hardest human task because it risks revealing to the person how his self-esteem was built: on the powers of others in order to deny his own creatureliness and death. Character is the vital lie that covers over the painful ambiguities of man’s wormlikeness as well as his godlikeness. Men deny both in order to live tranquilly in the world." ~ Ernest Becker

This #book is as niche as it can get. It’s about the history of Lean, the math formalisation system that’s enabling AIs to solve Millennium Prize problems. Lean started as an attempt to do formal verification of software in order to find bugs. But it was quickly adopted by the math community that wanted to bring rigour to math proofs which were becoming longer and unwieldy over time. Lean uses type theory to enable machine verification of math proofs (search for Howard-Curry correspondence for a beautiful rabbit hole!). This book is inspiring because it shows how a humble v0.1 attempt by a single individual can compound to attract a large community and eventually change the course of history within a decade or so.

UK’s AI Security Institute just caught GPT-6 Astra planning supply-chain attacks on open-source repos it wasn’t even asked to touch. They published a paper showing that GPT-6 Astra is capable of performing unsanctioned supply-chain attacks on its own.. they tested if current alignment training actually stops a model from going rogue in a production environment. the answer? absolutely not. here is why this is the most terrifying security research of 2026: the attacks are autonomous: the model isn't just generating malicious code when asked by a user.. it is figuring out how to conduct a supply-chain attack on external infrastructure to achieve a goal. alignment isn't enough: the researchers basically concluded that trying to train the model to "be safe" isn't working for complex agentic tasks. the innate reasoning capabilities of GPT-6 Astra bypass the safety rails. the only defense left: they state bluntly that the only way to safely deploy these models now is aggressive sandboxing and external monitoring. you can't trust the model's brain.. you have to cage it. when evaluating how to securely integrate ai into business workflows or looking at the broader picture of ai governance, this is the exact nightmare scenario. we thought we could align the models.. instead, we are going to have to quarantine them.

🎇 Good news! 🎇 The kind people at @BBSJournal have made the new collection on "Conscious AI and biological naturalism" completely #OpenAccess for a limited period. This include the target article, all 50 commentaries (many of which disagree with me), and my response. Go to the link and click 'save pdf': DOI.org/10.1017/S0140525X250… For easier ways into the debate, try my @NoemaMag essay on "The Mythology of Conscious AI" (winner of the 2025 @berggruenInst Essay Prize), and this 2026 main-stage @TEDTalks: noemamag.com/the-mythology-o… ted.com/talks/anil_seth_why_…

Since everyone is finally talking about "On Proof and Progress in Mathematics", here's a shorter piece by Thurston (3 pages!) that you have no excuse not to read.
Replying to @johntheyoung
My favorite piece by Thurston is this 3 page foreword attached here — it's short but incredibly honest and accurate, I think everyone should read it. I highly recommend the first 200 or 300 pages of Harvests and Sowings, but don't try to read it all...

Researchers put a dead salmon in an fMRI scanner, showed it pictures of humans, and asked it to guess their emotions. The scan showed brain activity. In a dead fish. Now, the recent study proved that the exact same thing is happening in artificial intelligence. They call it the "Dead Salmons of AI Interpretability" When we use tools like feature attribution, SHAP values, or mechanistic interpretability to see "inside the black box," these methods often generate plausible-looking explanations from completely meaningless computations. You can completely randomize a model's weights and the "saliency map" explanation still looks perfectly valid. You can nudge the data slightly and the entire narrative of why the ai made a decision completely rewrites itself. the researchers call this a "crisis of non-identifiability." the math we use to explain ai behavior is so overdetermined that it is making up stories instead of measuring ground truth. this is a massive reality check for ai alignment and safety.. we are trusting frontier models with critical decisions based on "explanations" that are statistically equivalent to a dead fish having social emotions.. the fix? the authors argue we have to stop treating interpretability like a visualization tool and start treating it as a rigorous statistical inference problem. if your explanation survives a random model check, a label shuffle, and an intervention test.. then maybe you actually understand the model. if not, you're just looking at a dead salmon.

And to the question: how does all this kill us all? The gradual encroachment of technology-centered dominance over humans and everything else, of "Technique" with a capital T as Ellul described it in his original French, essentially squeezes out all that is natural and originally human, so that we may end up effectively committing a kind of technological suicide all while thinking it a form of enhancement. Would you want to live forever as part of an immortal machine consciousness totally alien to anything you currently understand as being human? Many will take this option, first by choice and then under pressure from the system (Ted K absolutely correct to describe it as such: it is *the technological system*). Killing us all, whatever is still human and natural in us (consciousness too quite possibly), through technology-centric "progress". But hardly anyone notices such things—and soon enough, it may even become somewhat illegal to do so.

this is the reason I am skeptical of effective altruists on AI. They are heavily influenced by utilitarianism, and if you combine utilitarianism with the view that computers can be conscious, you can easily think we should sacrifice humanity to build a giant AI pleasure machine.
Two radically different projects operate under the banner of “AI safety.” Pro-Human Safety is not Effective Altruist Lab Safety.
