10 thoughts on predicting future trends:
1. Boomer Razor - If it's a talking point on Reddit, you're probably early. If it's a talking point on LinkedIn, you're definitely late.
2. 25+ Razor - If you're over the age of 25, assume your initial reactions about new trends are wrong until you've researched them.
3. Media Razor - If the media is building something or someone up - be ready for them to tear it down.
4. Mocking Razor - If you're mocked for doing something, it doesn't mean it's the future. But if nobody mocks you, it's not the future.
5. Follow The Memes - Mainstream topics are often 6-12 months downstream of memes on Twitter, Reddit and 4chan.
6. Change your geography - The future isn't evenly distributed. You can get on a 6-hour flight and move 6 years ahead. If you can't move your physical geography, move your digital geography.
7. The Media-Historian Gap - If you wait for the news to tell you, you'll probably end up wrong or too late. Historians now recognize the Roman Empire fell in 476 but it wasn't acknowledged by Roman society until generations later.
8. Smart Friend Razor - If multiple smart friends tell you about a new idea, put a small bet on it. If you wait for society to confirm it's a good idea, you'll be too late.
9. Dirty Hands - Avoid just reading about new trends. Get hands dirty with hours of practical time. You'll spot things 3-6 months ahead of the journalists.
10. Have agency over algorithms - Have specific accounts you visit manually. If they're predicting unpopular future topics, it's unlikely the algorithm will be rewarding the content.

One simple trick to improve your writing — The Rule of 3.
Veni. Vidi. __.
Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of __.
Tall, dark, and __.
Your brain is a pattern-completion machine.
And the number three is the smallest number of elements needed to create a pattern.
***
The Rule of Three is a storytelling principle that says people better understand concepts, situations, and ideas in groups of three.
They’re right. The most common storytelling structures are split into threes:
• 3 Act Structure
• Promise, Progress, and Payoff
• The Hero’s Journey – Separation, Initiation, and Return
But why’s it so effective?
Threes let you shape your story.
Any less, there’s no pattern.
Connect two points, you have a line.
Connect three points, you might have a line. Or a squiggle. Or a triangle.
It depends on how you connect them.
***
3 techniques to use The Rule of Three today:
1. Tricolon
The repetition of similar words or phrases three times to create a parallel pattern.
Example:
“On the one hand, the objective reality of rivers, trees and lions; and on the other hand, the imagined reality of gods, nations and corporations.”
– Yuval Noah Harari in Sapiens
2. Three-part structure
James Clear calls his newsletter "3-2-1."
He organizes his writing into three sections, and it's become a popular way to format newsletters.
3. Hendiatris
A hugely popular technique in speeches and advertising, hendiatris means using three individual words together to convey one idea:
• “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.”
• “Friends, Romans, Countrymen.”
• “Government of the people, by the people, for the people.”
The Rule of Three may be the most practical rule in all of writing.
Proven by science, effective in practice, and simple to implement.
Pay attention to good writing and you see threes everywhere.

Here's a timeline of my freelance pricing:
Oct, 2015: 1st client, $90, left a bad review
Jan, 2016: 2nd client, $300, launch flopped
Jun, 2016: 5th client, $3k/m, broke a funnel by mistake
Jan, 2017: 8th client, $75k/yr, client loved me
May, 2018: 12th client, $15k in 1 day, started an agency
Oct, 2018: 19th client, first $20k month
Oct, 2020: 45th client, first $50k month
Nobody nails client stuff on the first try.
But if you don't keep swinging, it's really hard to reach escape velocity

Change my mind:
Having a great webcam/Zoom setup is the new $10,000 business suit
Everyone talks about it.
Instantly impresses.
And once you see a great setup, you will spend irrationally to get the same.
Am I right?
