The cynicism of the Labour Party knows no bounds. They'll draw a "red line" at a motion calling Zionism racism but not at genocide. This is plainly designed to drive a wedge in the Greens. Force some councillors to peel off and create division - effectively using and abusing antisemitism (a profound and important issue) for short- term political goals. We know it's not about any principled stance about antisemitism because Philipson's clique has shown zero concern for the very many Jewish people, mostly anti-Zionist, who were investigated and effectively harassed by the Labour Party for their views on Israel. We also know it's rubbish because Labour has encouraged Councils to adopt the IHRA Definition of Antisemitism, which effectively makes expressing anti-Zionist beliefs an antisemitic offence, despite 12% of all British Jews declaring themselves anti-Zionist. But it is very on-brand for Phillipson, one of the collaborators in the Labour Together project that so irresponsibly, cynically and covertly used the very real and important issue of antisemitism for factional advantage. This is the essence of the McSweeney-ite method that did so much damage to the Labour Party, but also massively inflamed inter-community tensions in the UK. For ordinary people, the message will be: sorry, you can't effective, progressive and collaborative local government (good housing, clean streets, community centres, functional schools) because we draw a "red line" at calling Israel racist three years into a live-streamed genocide. The Greens should respond appropriately, calling out the Labour Party for using this issue as a political football, holding local government to ransom because they simply refuse to accept that they lost power five months ago. Call out the Labour Party for sabotaging good governance and coalition politics because they're sore losers - in the name of Zionism. Proper gutter politics, a crass rerun of Labour under Starmer. Burnham should be better than this; and should know that all this leads to is lots of left-wing people being unable to trust the Labour Party again.
BREAKING: The Labour Party has said that power-sharing agreements with the Green Party will end unless local Greens explicitly reject their party's "Zionism is racism" policy The Labour Party has asked all Labour groups in power-sharing agreements with the Green Party to review their arrangements in local government after the prime minister's words at PMQs yesterday. Bridget Phillipson MP, Chair of the Labour Party, said: “The Prime Minister has been completely clear: this policy is wrong and antisemitic, and has no place in British politics. “Where local Labour Parties currently have an arrangement with the Greens in local government, we expect their Green counterparts to make clear that they reject this position and to call on their national leadership to reconsider the policy. “We have asked local Green groups to respond as a matter of urgency. Where they are unable to provide that assurance, Labour will bring any such local arrangement to an end. This isn’t an issue of party politics; it’s about doing what is right and upholding the values anyone holding public office should share. “The Labour Party fought hard to address antisemitism within our own party and ensure it had no place in our politics. We have a responsibility to uphold those same standards in our relationships with other parties.”

There should be both a triple lock on pensions ( we have some of the worst pensions in Europe for one of Europe's hardest working workforce) and social care spending. Maybe the PM can start looking at where the money has gone in the last 25 years, who it went to and what it was spent on, alongside the routine and corrupt current practice of denying people social care who are having to sell homes and everything they have despite qualification for said care. Bookmark this because it will be a bigger scandal than Post Office and PPE combined. We're a rich nation who's people ( out collective fault for voting for people and manifestos that change mid term, something that should be a legally binding document by the way) have worked hard for local and national services, care in old age, and a modest buffer to live on in retirement. This is neither woke, lefty, righty or middly. It's what people vote for only to be u-turned by all governments. Norway has 3 trillion in the bank, great pension provision, child care, public services and elderly care. They don't have a magic money tree nor have things like the City of London which should be generating huge revenue privately that also benefits us publicly. They simply hold politicians to account, make sound national decisions and aren't tempted by snake oil salesmen promising the earth but delivering zero to them but plenty to pals. We do the opposite.

Gotta love partying with Palantir. SPOTTED last night schmoozing at Labour Conference: Palantir's new Vice President, Tom Watson. Also there, Benjamin Wegg-Prosser, co-founder of Global Counsel with Peter Mandelson, which repped Palantir. Yesterday the Conference Arrangements Committee blocked debates on an emergency motion on Palantir's contracts with the NHS. As I revealed last week, the value of Camden Council's investments in Palantir have increased by over 1200% since October 2023.

In the last election I got more than 7,300 votes against Starmer, & the Greens over 4,000. The Labour candidate is a Starmerite. A Polanski victory will be the final kick in the teeth for Starmer & everything he stands for. By working hard together I hope we can take the seat from Labour & herald the new politics we spoke about in the 2024 election
Zack Polanski will stand as the Green party candidate in the Holborn and St Pancras byelection slated for 8 October, the party confirmed on Friday. The announcement means local members voted to select Polanski over a surprise opponent, who ran against him from within his own party. Green councillor Hamza Chowdhury announced on Monday that he was also seeking nomination, arguing that as a Camden resident he would be better placed to represent constituents than the party leader, who lives in east London. Polanski’s selection comes just ten days after former prime minister Keir Starmer announced his resignation as MP and subsequent departure from the seat. The decision means that, a year on from becoming the Green leader, Polanski could be only weeks away from being catapulted into the House of Commons. But first he must face a high stakes contest against Labour – which won the seat with a more than 11,000 majority at the last general election – with the vote due to take place just a week after many Greens decamp to Brighton for the party’s annual conference. “The Greens might be the underdog in this election, but we have the momentum and we can win,” Polanski told a meeting to announce the party’s candidate on Friday. Asked by Novara Media whether he thought a Green win in Holborn and St Pancras would increase the chances of progressive announcements in the upcoming budget, Polanski said it would “make a huge difference”. “It would be a victory that would say that in this budget, Andy Burnham and John Healey as chancellor need to think about working people in this country – and indeed, people who are unemployed or disabled, people who are really, really suffering right now. “[Housing secretary] Angela Rayner ruled out rent controls. But I imagine that a Green victory would make the Labour government think pretty quickly again,” he gave as one example. Green membership has tripled from 68,500 to over 230,000 under Polanski’s leadership, and Hannah Spencer spearheaded the party’s first ever parliamentary byelection success in Gorton and Denton in February. But with a drop in Green voting intention since Andy Burnham became prime minister in July, an uphill battle looms. An all-time high of 21% of Brits said that they intended to vote Green in March, but that dropped to just 13% in August, according to YouGov polling. Holborn and St Pancras has been a Labour seat since the constituency’s creation in 1983. Its population has only been represented by two MPs: Frank Dobson from 1983 to 2015, and then Starmer, until earlier this month. Labour’s by-election pick is Sagal Abdi-Wali, the leader of Camden council. A child refugee from Somalia, Abdi-Wali grew up in the seat and is deeply concerned with tackling inequality. Polanski has also prioritised the issue, urging the government to bring in price caps to shield people from seismic energy bills, demanded an end to the two child benefit cap, and called for measures to protect people and food supplies from extreme heat and wildfires.

This is all true about Sagal, who is by all accounts a warm and dedicated person. But Reed's Party, and his close collaborator on the Labour Together protect, Shabana Mahmood, intend to introduce cruel and inhumane changes to the very asylum system that allowed Sagal's family to find refuge in the UK and for her to flourish. They are specifically and explicitly designed to deter asylum seekers from looking to the UK to settle - euphemistically referred to as "reducing the pull factors." They were husbanded by Starmer, Sagal's own local MP. Mahmood has been clear that her policies could lead to the deportation of children born in the UK to parents of asylum-seekers. She had also committed to legislating how the right to family life is interpreted by the courts - just the first step in undermining the ECHR. The Party is also targeting regular migrants - the type of people who have come to Camden from all over the world to work, live, love and contribute. I personally know parents at my local school who have been devastated by plans to raise the time it takes to get Indefinite Leave to Remain to fifteen years, which has caused their young family real distress. Starmer, Reed and Mahmood have done this to chase Reform voters by stealing the anti-immigrant clothes of Reform, all while Starmer talked about an Island of Strangers. Zia Yusuf is an unvarnished bigot who represents a Party flirting with the most regressive forms of nativism. But Reed and the nasty faction he represents (many of whom are still in Burnham's Cabinet) are in some ways worse - speaking the language of tolerance and respect and inclusion to score political points while making life unsafe and insecure for those, like Sagal's family, who have sought refuge in times of danger. They dignify the talking points of the nativist right, make policy to appease it, but then clutch pearls when it suits them. The real question will be for Sagal if she is elected as the Labour candidate: will she vote against her Party and her colleagues and to scrap the Mahmood's draconian reforms? Will she tell Shabana Mahmood where to stick it? Or will she remain silent and compliant like other Camden councillors have been on Gaza? Because we know for certain Mahmood's attack on migrant rights will be opposed fiercely and on principle by the Greens. Maybe voters in Camden will choose to send a message to Burnham instead: ditch Mahmood and her hard-line policies, or give up winning seats in places like Camden forever.
Sagal was brought up in Camden and has earned the right to stand for her community through her hard work and talent. Judging her by where she was born rather than all she’s done for her borough is prejudiced, racist and wrong and goes against all London stands for.

If you can watch only one video to understand current geopolitics, make it this one by George Yeo, one of Singapore's longest-serving cabinet ministers (23 years!) As Yeo explains, current global geopolitics is fundamentally driven by US "retreat" and "decline", forced by a financial reality that no US administration can reverse: its debt servicing already exceeding its entire defense budget. To Yeo, this explains why the US insists so much that its "allies" in Europe and Asia spend more of their GDP on defense - to basically pick up the tab for an empire America can no longer afford - but it also means that, inevitably, "once your allies begin to have their own military capabilities, they will think differently, and they will not follow you in everything that you want to do." As such, American decline becomes self-reinforcing: the more it asks allies to carry their own weight, the less reason they have to follow its lead. Still, Yeo says that a similar dynamic to one that happened after the fall of Rome could occur where America - like Byzantium did - sheds its empire and consolidates around its own hemisphere, allowing it to remain self-sustaining and powerful for a very long time. He believes it's the direction things are heading - which would also explain Trump's obsession with Canada and Greenland. It remains however obviously an open question whether an American "Byzantium strategy" is even achievable: Canada, for one, clearly wants no part of it. Two years ago, Starmer sat down with BlackRock at Downing Street and posted about "partnership." Almost nobody has connected the dots since: BlackRock is now one of the creditors positioned to take control of Thames Water, Britain's largest water utility, serving 16 million people. And the ownership graphic doing the rounds right now, OMERS 32%, USS 20%, Infinity Investments SA 10%, is out of date. It describes the 2023 equity structure of Kemble Water Holdings, the pension fund consortium that owned Thames Water's parent company. That structure no longer controls anything.🧵

This is being briefed as if it's unions opposing donations caps and that's why Burnham has caved on his promises to cap political donations at £500k. But we've literally JUST SEEN Burnham's donations disclosures, which are not even mentioned in this article. They show Burnham getting a pittance from unions but substantial donations from Gary Lubner (£25k) and Lord Sainsbury (over £160k) to support his Labour leadership bid. Lubner and Sainsbury were two of the biggest previous funders of Labour Together and the Starmer projects, who both personally made donations in the millions to Labour Together and/or the Labour Party. Burnham made his promise to cap donations at £500k to an activist in May this year. And then in June and July he gets bankrolled by the types of mega-donors who would be impacted by a donations cap, limiting their ability to influence politics. Then he drops the proposals that would impact on his personal donors. Deeply disappointing and really hard not to join these dots. theguardian.com/politics/202…

It’s worse than that . Finch said he was acting on “a number” of complaints from local people. So Labour MP Rachel Taylor asked the council for the actual figures. There have been no complaints. If you lied like this in a normal job you’d be sacked. Why are our journos who’ve🧵
George Finch, the Reform UK leader of Warwickshire County Council, has been accused of bigotry and censorship after suggesting LGBTQ+ books should be removed from local libraries. But where exactly does this end? Libraries hold books on socialism and capitalism, atheism and every religion under the sun, evolution, the monarchy, and countless other contested ideas. That’s the point of a library: a place where people encounter perspectives that challenge, stretch, and broaden the mind. Finch is only 19, and it shows. He may simply not have read enough to grasp how books cultivate critical thinking, empathy, and a more informed, more tolerant society. Who on earth keeps voting for people this determined to stay ignorant? #ReformUK
