The sparrow campaign remains the perfect parable of central planning: the state declares war on nature, nature wins, and ordinary people pay the price. God bless!

As the Chinese Communist Party holds the power to formulate policies, monopolise evaluation criteria and determine which criticisms may be voiced, ‘people’s democracy’ is nothing more than a propaganda slogan. Time and again, absurd political campaigns have led to disaster.

The insanity of central planning

One man decided which animal China no longer needed.
Millions of people carried out his order, the biologists who knew better were overruled, and nature answered with locusts.
Central planners misjudge far more than prices. They misjudge everything their plan cannot see, and the people who carry out the plan pay for the mistakes.

Save this for the next time someone says nature would be safer under socialism. Send it to a friend who believes a planned economy would take better care of the planet.

Outside universities, Hall is better known for a tax.
In 1981, he and his co-author Alvin Rabushka proposed a flat tax in the Wall Street Journal. They developed the idea in two books, published in 1983 and 1985.
The plan taxes wages once, at a single rate, above a family allowance. Income below the allowance is not taxed. Their 19% version meant a household paid 19% on every dollar above it.
Businesses are taxed on revenue minus wages, purchases and investment. Saving and investment are not taxed a second time.

Commodus is the populist. He says "I call it love. I am their father, the people are my children," feeds the crowd bread and games, and hates the institutions that stand between him and them.
Gracchus is the republican. He has no illusions about the crowd and defends the institutions for exactly that reason.
The film's defender of democracy is the one character who refuses to flatter the people, and the tyrant is the one who can't stop telling them he loves them.

Cambridge will not fix this from the inside.
The people who broke the filter cannot be the ones to rebuild it. That work begins on the ground, one campus at a time, with students who refuse the ideological substitute for competence.

DEI hurts the people it claims to help most of all.
The academic who spent fifteen years publishing serious work now sees her book read through the doubt Cambridge created. Every real achievement in an underrepresented career now carries an asterisk the institution attached to it. Arday himself resigned on August 5, 2026 and was found dead nine days later at his home in Battersea.
The people who elevated him tried to scapegoat the retired professor who exposed the plagiarism. The blame sits with those who used an unserious scholar as a mascot for a project no honest evaluation would have approved.
