Labour still haven’t learnt that taxes have consequences. John Healey and Andy Burnham need to learn quickly.
Rachel Reeves thought her jobs tax would be paid by businesses. Instead, workers paid the price through job losses and smaller pay rises.
Now Labour want to tax the banks because it looks like an easy way to raise money, doesn’t it?
But banks lend money to people buying homes and businesses creating jobs. Millions of people’s pensions are invested in them too.
Higher taxes mean a smaller pension for you, less lending and less investment, meaning fewer jobs and ordinary people paying the price again.
Labour can’t act shocked when this happens - they have been warned.

Zionism is both historic and spiritual; the ancient connection of the Jewish people to the land of Israel and their right to self-determination in their historic homeland.
I am British by birth, belonging and love; Jewish by inheritance, memory and faith. Britain is my country. Israel is not a competing loyalty, it is the homeland of the Jewish people to which I am bound by ancestry, memory and identity.
For millions of Jews, that is the heart of Zionism. Not supremacy, dispossession or the killing of Palestinians and not a colonial claim to a foreign land but the self-determination of a people with an ancient and continuous connection to it. In practice, it must mean two peoples entitled to self-determination both living in security and freedom with neither people’s future purchased with the lives, rights or humanity of the other.
That is why declaring “Zionism is racism” is not merely wrong, it tells most Jews that their understanding of their own history, identity and collective freedom is itself morally suspect. The Greens should ask themselves whom they are trying to please by adopting a slogan that turns Jewish self-determination into a moral stain. If your politics of inclusion requires millions of Jews to renounce a central part of their history and identity before they qualify for your solidarity, it isn’t inclusion. You are telling Jews: you may belong here but only if you disown Israel as the homeland of the Jewish people. That is not anti-racism. It is imposing a political test on Jews that no genuinely progressive movement would dream of imposing on any other minority.

Although it was an extremely impressive speech. And God knows, I'm partial to a dose of nostalgic, pro-worker rhetoric. It's just that on content, I disgreed with huge sections of it - embracing EU / harping back to nationalisation / romantcising council housing (but where are those new houses?). And I also noted what wasn't said eg on defence and God knows, the migration, policing and prison crisis won't be solved on his watch
Remember when Starmer's speech last year was the best Labour conference speech in 20 years hands down

Andy Burnham became Prime Minister because his Chancellor brought down Starmer over Defence spending, and the need to get to 3%. Not a word on this today. No mention of 3% or how to pay for it.
We face the most heightened threats since the Cold War, yet Burnham was almost completely silent on the number one job he has - making Britain safe, in a more dangerous world.

If you watch anything today, watch this. I was privileged enough to hear this real time in the chamber.
A powerful speech on why we must prevent further investigations into veterans who served in Northern Ireland without new compelling evidence.
Thank you @LincolnJopp for standing up for the brave men and women who did their duty in the most dangerous and challenging of circumstances.

If we rank the heroes and villains of the slave trade, the Church of England stands (alongside Quakers and Methodists) close to the top of the heroes’ table.
William Wilberforce, who pushed through the legislation to extirpate the foul business, was moved by his Anglican faith. So was John Newton, the former slave trader who repented, composed Amazing Grace and ended his days as a Church of England curate.
Thanks to them, and to hundreds of thousands of ordinary churchgoers who lent support to their campaigns, Britain not only abolished slavery in the parts of the world it controlled, but poured its blood and treasure into a long, gruelling and ultimately successful war against the slave trade everywhere else.
Does that story smack too much of patriotism and of “white saviour complex”? Well, the hundreds of young British men who, acting on their faith, gave their lives to hunting down slave ships after 1807 were white and, in this case, were literally saviours.
So were the Anglican missionaries who penetrated the African interior, often dying of tropical diseases, seeking to persuade local potentates to free their chattels.
So, arguably, were the taxpayers who gladly approved the spending of 1.8 per cent of GDP annually between 1808 and 1867 on global eradication: the most expensive moral foreign policy in human history.
That was meaningful restitution. Britain had been a player in the slave trade in the 17th and 18th centuries. When, like John Newton, it saw that it had been wrong, it sought to make good that wrong by liberating as many remaining slaves as it could, diverting ships to hunt down the Guineamen even at the height of its life-and-death struggle with Napoleon.
If slavery is your issue, you could help complete the Church’s abolitionist mission by taking the campaign to the countries where human bondage is most prevalent today: North Korea, Eritrea, Mauritania, Afghanistan. But that does not carry the kudos of self-reproach.

Absolutely. For goodness sake Government back those who put their bodies on the firing line for all of us.

This is an outrageous, disgraceful smear on John Healey — and an outright lie. There are a ton of ways to finance more for defence — starting with net zero — without taking a penny from schools or hospitals. Reeves should be ashamed of herself for allowing this nonsense. Suggests she’s really desperate.

I’d thought there was a small chance Downing Street was trying to do the right thing, but struggling against a Labour Parliamentary Party that would not do the necessary, including cutting welfare. Guess this disgraceful quote has flattened that theory. They really don’t get the peril they are putting nation in.

Well done, @JohnHealey_MP. We prioritise disability benefits over drones. The MoD can’t get the £28 billion which it needs to keep us safe, yet the welfare budget is set to rise by £42 billion.
We spend more than 5️⃣ times as much on social security as on actual security.

People really need to listen to @michaelgove here. He is absolutely right: Reform is not Conservative, and it is not even right-wing.
Reform exists to split and destroy the British Right, deliver nothing, and hand Britain over to radical left governments throughout the 2030s.

🚨 BOOM! Nick Ferrari just put Deputy PM David Lammy on the ropes LIVE on LBC! 🔥
“Would you take the knee for Henry Nowak?”
Lammy instantly flustered, stuttering like he’s been caught red-handed:
“Uhh… well I, look, I, I, I, I think… to honour what’s that family…”
Ferrari cuts through the waffle:
“It’s a yes or no, Mr Lammy. Would you take the knee for Henry Nowak?”
Lammy, clearly squirming:
“I think… no. Because, look, I don’t think the family are asking for symbolism. They’re asking for genuine common sense policing and a reduction in knife crime.”
Ferrari pounces:
“So you agree, taking the knee is mere symbolism? It was a bit of a charade at times?”
Lammy’s brain completely melts:
“That was a moment back then when we were still in the pandemic. This is today. This is this particular incident in our country that’s heart-rending.”
The pandemic?! What the actual f*ck has COVID got to do with it? 😂 His head had totally gone. Nick Ferrari absolutely broke him on air.
This is the same David Lammy who was one of the biggest cheerleaders for BLM, repeatedly defended taking the knee, slammed anyone who questioned it, and pushed the George Floyd narrative hard, yet suddenly it’s all “symbolism” and excuses when it’s a young British lad stabbed to death.
Well done, Nick Ferrari 👏 You exposed the hypocrisy and double standards for everyone to see. No wonder people are furious.

This is wrong. It doesn't matter who you vote for, but Kemi Badenoch expressly stated that ALL lives matter and it shouldn't be about someone's race. This sort of "attack ad" isn't about facing up to important issues, it's just a lie.
Kemi Badenoch, just like Starmer, doesn’t care.
Only Reform UK will openly say that white lives matter too.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
The exact words were;
"I don’t want to hear about Black Lives Matter.
I don’t want to hear about White Lives Matter.
Everyone matters.
Henry Nowak matters."
