Four different companies sold four different brands of ground beef at four different prices, and every package in that recall came out of one factory. In January 2022 that plant pulled 28,000 pounds of raw ground beef for E. coli O157:H7, the strain that causes kidney failure in children. The recall covered Walmart, Kroger, Albertsons, and WinCo. The brand on the front of the package is the least useful thing printed on it. As Ben Azadi broke it down, you are buying the factory's product, and the label is the part that tells you the least. Two words printed in the smallest font on the box decide what a company is legally allowed to put in your family's dinner. "Ground beef" is a protected term. Federal law limits that package to beef and seasonings, and nothing else gets in. "Beef patties" carries no such protection. Binders, fillers, water, and partially defatted beef fat are all legal in it. "All natural" means no artificial ingredients and minimal processing. That is the entire USDA definition, and it says nothing about antibiotics, hormones, what the animal ate, or whether it ever saw grass. The USDA withdrew its own grass-fed standard in January 2016 and decided it had no legal authority to define the term at all. The company printing the label defines what grass-fed means. Look for a seal next to the claim. The American Grassfed Association requires a 100% pasture-fed diet from weaning to slaughter, with no feedlots, no antibiotics, and no hormones. A statement with a seal has an inspector behind it. A statement with nothing next to it has the marketing department behind it. One steak is one animal. One pound of ground beef can come from dozens, each one a separate risk, which is why ground beef fills the recall reports and steak does not. Four companies process about 85% of the beef in this country. In May 2026 the Justice Department confirmed a criminal antitrust investigation into all four. An investigation is not a verdict, all four deny wrongdoing, and nobody has been charged yet. The one line on that label the marketing department cannot write is the establishment number inside the USDA shield. It tells you which plant your dinner came from.
