Our new paper is finally out! Using multivariate patterns of fMRI activity, we could predict above chance which of five real people from a participant’s social group they were thinking about during a simple personality trait judgment task. 🧠

Our latest paper, led by Taylor Guthrie. We show that multivariate fMRI signals can decode the identity of specific individuals within the DMN and in the absence of visual features or other lower-level sensory information. link.springer.com/article/10…
These results replicate previous identity decoding studies using faces and other information but does so in a trait-judgment task devoid of lower-level perceptual cues, with multiple well-known individuals as targets, and in a much larger sample than previous studies.
Our latest paper on computational mechanisms of self-enhancement with links to mental health. We used hierarchical Bayesian drift diffusion modeling to decompose choices on a social comparison task and relate them internalizing symptoms.

Using a round-robin design, this study replicated the “self-recapitulation effect” (where neural representations of the self are similar to those in close others’ brains) and revealed how self-esteem modulates this effect.

I'm going to take a leap here and say that doing fMRI person decoding social neuroscience projects is causally related to eventually winning a Nobel Prize..
First Oregon football game ever, friends visiting, fall family fest... Throwing in the towel and going full dad mode, lately.
And we're back (all 500 of us)! First day of Intro to Psychology at @uoregon 🦆
When it comes to purchasing products, my wife wants all kinds of things but doesn't really end up liking any of them. I don't really want anything but kinda like all of them.
Together, we make one completely dysfunctional reward system.

Writing this was cathartic! Thank you to my parents & wife for encouraging me to share our story. I hope it resonates w/ others feeling the squeeze of academia, raising kids, & supporting aging parents. #ScienceWorkingLife @ScienceCareers @ScienceMagazine science.org/content/article/…
