Today is a big day and we need your help. My #GivingTuesday personal story…Put together non profit to save my rural historic downtown performance theatre. Hurricane Helene tore our roof off to the tune of almost $300,000. Insurance has left us very short. Any help would be gratefully appreciated. Link is in first comment.

This is what happens when you claim you are destitute and throw yourself on the government to take care of you via Medicaid. They let you keep the house to live in until you die, then you have to pay the bill.
My coworker's mother passed away last November. She left her modest $190,000 house to him clear and free, no mortgage, completely paid off after thirty years of factory work. He moved into the home in January to finally settle the estate. Two weeks ago, a letter arrived from the state Medicaid estate recovery office. Because his mother spent four months in a rehabilitation facility before she passed, the state quietly slapped a retroactive $114,000 lien against the property title. He called the state health department, frantic, asking how a hospital stay could bankrupt an inherited home that had no mortgage balance. The caseworker sighed and told him: "Federal law requires state programs to claw back healthcare costs from deceased estates. The house cannot be sold or transferred until the balance is cleared in full." He offered to pay a monthly settlement. They said no. The full $114,000 is due in 60 days, or they foreclose on the property at a public auction. A lifetime of working-class savings, wiped out overnight by a retroactive healthcare lien. You don't own generational wealth. You're just holding a property title until the state finds a legal mechanism to repossess it the moment you die.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
Because the house is worth $190,000 and the average house sale price is over$440,000, the house likely qualifies for the "modest value" exemption. (Check county values) YOU MUST APPLY FOR THIS WITHIN 60 DAYS OF GETTING THE NOTICE!!! kff.org/medicaid/what-…

That was a direct F U message to America from Ukraine. I’m still not sure Russia is the bad guy when the other side are the EU/USA warmongers.
BREAKING: Ukraine has just struck the St. Petersburg oil port and set it ablaze, with massive fires rising, one of Russia's largest fuel storage and export facilities. Zelensky said two days ago that Ukraine will restart major strikes on Russian energy. "The block on attacking refineries is out. We're done."

Today’s adventure on ChatGPT. “I understand. I made this harder than it needed to be, and you had to keep pushing for a clear, evidence-based answer. I’m sorry.”

Does “qualified immunity” mean cops can do anything they want?

Yikes. Maid moved my router yesterday and had it face down. I wasn’t getting wifi coverage in bedroom and had videos running on my phone and fell asleep. Woke up to about $200 of Verizon overage charges for cell data.

Hard to beat a nice cigar while listening to frogs and crickets on the eve of whooping Auburn’s butt. I believe @BobbyWilson1004 would agree with me.

Why?
💔 A cop lured dogs out with KISSY noises, then SHOT a 16-week-old puppy. His name was Apollo. A 16-week-old Catahoula. 22 pounds of PURE wiggle. April 2021. Officer Derrick Burmaster shows up on a disturbance call at the family's home. Before he ever sees a dog, his gun is already DRAWN. His partner taps him to go. Holds the gate OPEN for him. He stays. Apollo comes running, tail wagging. Burmaster has a taser right there. He fires his gun three times instead. Apollo DIED in his family's arms. It was Burmaster's SECOND dead dog. His own department's review board called it UNJUSTIFIED. A jury agreed he VIOLATED that family's rights. Then he walked on qualified IMMUNITY. This July, an appeals court upheld it. A baby dog. A partner trying to get him to LEAVE. And NOBODY pays. How is that JUSTICE? ⚠️ Warning: Bodycam shows a puppy being shot.

Disgusting human. He should be unalived by fire.
He threw a puppy into a fire on Facebook Live. Then he kicked it back in when it tried to crawl out. December 18, 2024. Orangeburg, South Carolina. Deputies got the video the same day and found the dead puppy in the woods nearby. Desmond Levon Brown, 30, pleaded guilty under the federal PACT Act. Today a Columbia judge gave him 5 years in prison and 3 years supervised release. First PACT Act case the U.S. Attorney in South Carolina has ever prosecuted. Max was 7. U.S. Attorney Bryan Stirling called it heinous. Five years out of seven. You tell me if that matches what he did to that puppy. H/t: U.S. Attorney's Office SC / WACH

Serious question. Was everyone living paycheck to paycheck before the societal breakup of the nuclear family started with extra baby mamas and child support for several pre-marriage or post-marriage kids? I see a lot of people can’t get by but they have lots of child support

I’m not even sure Day is the best coach in his state.
Day vs Cignetti. The two best coaches in college football, and Saturday tells us who's really No. 1. Last time Day got conservative, we lost 13-10 in Indy. No sitting on a lead. No slow-play crap. Go for the kill early and keep your foot on the gas.

Another one. They don’t care.
🚨 A family opened their back door to let their dog out... and a cop they didn't know was there KILLED her in five seconds. Then he pointed his gun at her OWNER. Her name was Tesla. A 3-year-old black Lab from Rochester, New York. October 19th, 2018. Police were chasing two suspects through backyards. They already had them in CUFFS. It was OVER. But Officer Javier Algarin hopped the Dempsey family's fence AGAIN. No warrant. No knock. Nobody inside even knew he was there. Three seconds later, Charles Dempsey opened the back door. Tesla ran off her OWN porch into her OWN backyard. "Whoa! Whoa! Whoa! Hey!" BANG. BANG. Five seconds. She was DEAD. Then he turned the gun on Charles. "LEAVE MY PROPERTY!" Charles screamed. "Get back!" the officer yelled. Years later, under oath: Could this have been avoided if you'd just knocked and asked permission? His answer: "Yes." The family fought for seven years. A federal jury found him PERSONALLY liable. $125,000. Rochester's training? "DELIBERATE INDIFFERENCE." At least 6 dogs killed by that department from 2017 to 2019. And that officer? He's STILL on the job. In 5 days it'll be EIGHT YEARS since Tesla died in her own yard. HOW IS HE STILL WEARING A BADGE?!!!!!!

Wow
A court said Lydia Nikac couldn't share this video. She put it out anyway. October 2024 in Pitt County NC, her two trained Belgian Malinois, Bonnie and Clyde, cornered a man accused of breaking into her car. She called 911. State Trooper Justin Maness showed up. The camera is pointed at a building so you don't see it happen. But you hear it. "If a dog comes over here, I'm gonna shoot it." Then the shots. Then her screaming. Both dogs dead. The troopers association calls it justified self-defense. Nikac says Clyde was just trotting over curious. Last week the NC Court of Appeals upheld the order keeping the video from the public. She's appealing again. If police video of a shooting on your own property can be locked away from you, the law is broken. NC folks, call your state lawmakers and ask them to change it. Video in the replies. Footage released by Lydia Nikac. H/t: @iamyleigh
