$QCOM still awaiting judge's decision
$QCOM just won a jury verdict in its licensing dispute with $ARM with a 5-year royalty clause potentially worth ~$1.5B still awaiting judge’s decision. Qualcomm is one of Arm’s biggest customers so the outcome could shape future licensing agreements as Arm expands beyond chip designs into selling its own silicon.

$QCOM prevails
We are gratified that the jury found Arm breached its long-standing Architectural License Agreement (ALA) with Qualcomm, failed to honor its commitments, and intentionally acted to disrupt Qualcomm's businesses. Together with Qualcomm's prior court victory, this outcome further exposes Arm’s broader intentions to harm Qualcomm and its ecosystem. This outcome is a victory for innovation and competition, and we remain focused on developing and delivering industry-leading semiconductor products including our Oryon CPUs to customers and consumers worldwide. qualcomm.com/news/releases/2…

According to the Financial Times, Nvidia is in talks to acquire Reflection AI, the American open weight model startup it has already put $800 million into. Reflection AI was founded in 2024 by former Google DeepMind researchers and on Monday it launched its first open weight model, called Beam, to compete in coding and agentic tasks. This chart explains why Nvidia cares so much. On one major AI gateway, open weight models went from a minority of token volume in June to 78.4% by mid-September while closed models are down to just 21.6%. Closed models like Claude Opus 4.8 and GPT 5.6 Sol still take the biggest share of the dollars, but Chinese open models like Kimi K3 and DeepSeek are already in the top 10. That is the problem for the United States. Most of the best open weight models today come from China and Reflection is one of the few serious American companies trying to change that. For Nvidia, every open model that gets downloaded and deployed still needs GPUs to run. If the leading American open models are built and optimized on Nvidia hardware, that drives even more demand for $NVDA chips. It also moves Nvidia closer to owning the full stack. Jensen is once again playing 4D chess.
Cheaper tokens do not mean less compute, they mean more of it. @GavinSBaker is exactly right here because an open weight token uses roughly the same compute and energy as a closed model token when the models are a similar size. This chart from one AI gateway shows how fast the shift is happening. Open weight models were a minority of token volume in June, and by mid-September they made up 78.4% of it. While the spend data tells a very different story. Closed models like Claude Opus 4.8 and GPT 5.6 Sol still take the biggest share of the dollars, even though they are losing share of the tokens. That gap is the whole point. Developers are moving their volume to cheaper models, but they are not using less AI because of it but using a lot more. Ramp's data in Gavin's chart shows the same pattern. Token volumes rose about 7x from January to September, while AI spend actually fell over the same period. This means the model layer is likely to see its margins squeezed as prices keep falling. Gavin also points out that open weight tokens are some of the highest margin tokens for the cloud providers that serve them. Every one of those tokens still has to run on GPUs, memory and networking gear. Cheaper models make AI more affordable, and that pulls even more demand into the data center. That is why I think the infrastructure layer keeps winning no matter which model wins. The companies I am watching most closely are $NVDA, $AMD, $AVGO and $MU. Bullish on AI infrastructure. Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon says some of the top AI companies want phones that can run at least a 100 billion parameter model by 2028. They want that model running all the time, not just loaded for one task. Qualcomm's newest flagship chip handles about a 30 billion parameter model today. That means AI companies are asking for more than 3 times the model size in about 2 years. Amon also says some AI companies are starting to build their own phones, but he would not name them. A model that size needs a lot of memory sitting inside every phone. $QCOM $MU

Taiwanese media: Intel, Qualcomm, and AMD have all raised CPU prices or are planning to do so. Intel raised CPU prices across product lines starting September 1. High-end Panther Lake products saw increases of 15–20%, while Meteor Lake and Arrow Lake prices rose by around 5–10%. Qualcomm is raising prices for platforms including Snapdragon X/X2 Elite by around 10% starting in October. AMD is preparing price adjustments for some CPUs. The size and scope of the increases, as well as their timing, have yet to be confirmed. ctee.com.tw/news/20261012700…

We discuss why he thinks phones aren’t going away, how agents will use our personal context, and why he expects smart glasses to become the biggest category of AI wearables. We also cover differences in consumer AI adoption between China and the US, Qualcomm’s acquisition of Modular to offer developers an alternative to Nvidia’s software, and what 6G could change about the devices we use. Qualcomm CEO reveals AI companies want phones running 100-billion-parameter models continuously by 2028--and confirms some are building phones Cristiano Amon: “I have to be careful not to disclose names, but some AI companies—some of the companies at the forefront of AI—are telling Qualcomm, ‘By 2028, I need to make sure that I have the ability to run at least a 100-billion-parameter model in a phone, and I need to have this thing running kind of all the time.’” Alex Heath: “So you’re saying there are AI companies that are talking about—” Cristiano Amon: “Well, AI companies are starting to do phones.”

I think the next few years could change how people value $QCOM. Automotive revenue grew 61% last quarter. Qualcomm is taking more of that computing expertise into robotics, while its CFO expects a wave of personal AI devices over the next 6–9 months. I own it in my Physical AI portfolio. My updated article breaks down what these developments change in my earnings model and why I think a higher valuation multiple could be justified. Full thesis and financial model: gaetanoresearch.substack.com… NFA, long term investment for me
