New: Tension at the Associated Press over use of AI. One of the AP newsroom leaders leading the company's AI initiatives told staff that many editors preferred an AI-written article to a human one, and told them when it comes to using AI in the newsroom "resistance is futile."

"It is vital to remember that it is the words and actions of all members of the scientific community—universities, journals, societies, associations, activists, and scientists—that form the collective voice of science, not any one statement," writes H. Holden Thorp in a new #ScienceEditorial. scim.ag/3XfkmIY

2024: Of all the talks I gave this year, this is the quote folks told me resonated the most with them: Students are not our enemy. They are our future. #AcademicIntegrity

Often when I ask a chatbot to do, say, a sample abstract for a talk, my first reaction is "Whoa, it's really pretty good, it's onto things I missed." Then after I spend some time considering, my take is "It's kind of garbage. But it got me started writing my own thing."

great rhetorical analysis—word choices and their contexts. The evidence doubles as argument—very sly. But a question: how possible is it to use such a politically specific essay as a laboratory for instruction in methods of rhetorical analysis? politico.com/news/magazine/2…
Provocative perspective/s on class, age, and power. What this piece provoked for me included genuine nausea. There’s little news, little we didn’t already know, but as Tina Brown says here, it’s the photos that bring the visceral to the story.
“Dafydd [Jones]’s brilliant evocation of a time and a class only seem more potent today, when we know that so many of the moneyed twits in his ’80s portfolio ended up running the country, as they always have,” Tina Brown writes. nyer.cm/C3ofA4Y
"AI detectors are still very inaccurate and not worth using because of the high degree of false positives and false negatives, and the bias towards falsely labeling non-native speakers’ human writing as AI." With links. blog.mahabali.me/educational…
“It’s not the cult of pedagogy which is the problem. It is the cult of efficiency which is driving almost all of the pedagogy & professional development these days. [S]ince efficiency needs codification, that also has made the grip of efficiency tighter.” sunilsingh-42118.medium.com/…

The police telling me that they were as well prepared and well staffed as possible for the Super Bowl parade and people still got shot is proof that there's no amount of policing that can make us safe. The problem is too many guns.
When I was an undergraduate at #WVU, I double majored in English and Appalachian studies. I took a survey of Appalachian music that taught me an appreciation of Appalachian banjo and hammered dulcimer. Look what’s happening now! BTW, WVU has now cut its Appalachian studies major.
So, I’m investigating this tip (and thanks, Mushtaq), and I read a Jenni review that says something I haven’t seen before: that Paperpal helps improve users’ writing SKILLS. Most of the AIs allege to improve only the writing. Further investigations afoot!
I’ve spent a career surfing the muck of plagiarism and fraud, but I am still capable of being flabbergasted. science.org/content/article/…

If you're ever tempted to think that last fall's protests against WVU's austerity scandal were overblown, a reminder that there is no longer an Appalachian studies program at West Virginia University in West Virginia, USA.
But that liberal arts curriculum has just gotta go. . . .
The University spent $350k on roundtrip charter flights to Charleston, West Virginia, in 2023, expending nearly 40 times the cost to drive per trip.

I’m looking at the stapler on my desk and wondering why it’s there. When is the last time I actually used a stapler? No memories. It’s a holdover from the print universe, a small artifact that has (up until now) escaped retirement. Off it goes!
We are not that many decades from when teachers used to beat their students and it was OK with everybody. School is still a brutal place, with many power-laden forms of aggression toward individual students and en masse. Even in the assignments we give.
