French students do have a point. Many schools are in bad shape. Classes are overcrowded, teachers are missing, buildings are falling apart, and a lot of kids are rightfully angry about it. But almost nobody in the mainstream is willing to identify the obvious why. France spends more on education than most OECD countries. The real problem is not that the system is underfunded. It is what those resources are wasted on. A large and growing share of students in the worst-affected schools come from mass migration. Many arrive with little or no French. Average cognitive ability is lower. Behaviour is worse. Respect for teachers and rules is weaker. Integration is virtually non-existent. Teachers end up spending most of their time and energy just trying to manage the disruption, the language gap, and the constant low-level chaos. That has wide consequences. Other students get less attention. Standards drop. Classrooms become less safe. Teachers burn out or leave. Materials and buildings take more damage. The remaining French kids, and the kids who actually want to learn, pay the price. The demands for more teachers and better buildings are understandable. But this is still only treating the symptoms. As long as French schools keep absorbing large numbers of students who do not speak the language, do not meet the academic baseline, and do not accept the authority of the institution, the decline will only accelerate.
