Aging may feel gradual… but what if it’s not?
In our paper out today, we tracked fish continuously from puberty until death.
This gave us a unique view of how aging unfolds across the adult lifespan.

Happy to share the lab’s latest research tagging psychedelic-activated neurons in mice. See the post below from first author @jessie_muir for a tweeprint on the work.
Thanks to wonderful collaborators @DEOlsonLab @LinTianPhD and to our reviewers/editor!

Excited to share the Kim Lab’s newest paper in @ScienceMagazine with Sophia Lin (twitterless) and @tinakim_neuro ! We look at circuit mechanisms of psychedelic action underlying therapeutic-like effects in the PFC.

I’m very excited to share that my graduate work is now online in @ScienceMagazine today!
With generous help from my mentor @yuji_ikegaya and my amazing teammates, we investigated a top-down pathway for volitional heart rate regulation!

Excited to share that part of my graduate work is now online today in @Nature!
All meals come to an end.
With help from my mentor @zaknight and many teammates in the Knight lab, I investigated how this process occurs. nature.com/articles/s41586-0…

1. 1. I am thrilled to announce that I’ll be starting my lab (fanlab.mit.edu/) @MIT_Picower @mitbrainandcog @MIT in Jan 2024! We will be innovating high-precision all-optical technologies and making discoveries of brain mechanisms that give rise to learning and memory.
Thank you, @PackardFnd, for the honor and opportunity to be named a #PackardFellows class of 2023! With this support, we will advance technologies to decode brain-body circuits @NeurosurgUCSF, @UCSF.

Congratulations to my cohort of fellows, including @Dayne_Swearer! I’m excited to meet old and new friends at the next #PackardFellows meeting.
Congratulations @tanlongzhi, @jshi_7 and co-authors on uncovering unexpected insights on the restructuring of the 3D genome in cerebellar granule cells across lifespan!
Once born, most neurons must work a lifetime. How do they store genomic information in 3D for 100 years? My lab's first paper @ScienceMagazine made the first measurement of aging 3D genome, and discovered lifelong changes in the human and mouse cerebellum: science.org/doi/full/10.1126…
Deeply grateful for the valuable support from @KlingensteinOrg . We are excited to develop tools to deepen our understanding of the neural circuits behind cardiac interoception @NeurosurgUCSF.
Congratulations Ritchie Chen, PhD recipient of a Klingenstein-Simons Fellowship in Neuroscience for the project “Understanding emotions by studying brain-body pathways.” bit.ly/3pBEGXy @ritchie_chen @SimonsFdn
We’re excited to extend noninvasive optogenetics beyond the brain to address a nearly 150-year-old question in a new study out today @Nature:

Work led by @HsuehBrian, myself, and @KarlDeisseroth, with an amazing team in the D-lab and many others!
Then, simultaneously controlling heart and brain with optogenetics, we found that inhibition of insula reduced anxiety-like behavior during cardiac pacing, suggesting that brain and body should be jointly considered to better understand origins and representations of emotions
This approach, which required no specialized bioelectronics or surgery, can be generalized across the body to explore how organ function and brain states are coordinated.
Thanks to @Anna_Beyeler and Yoni Coudec for the excellent News and Views!

I am beyond excited to be starting my lab (chenlab-ucsf.org) @UCSF in the Department of Neurological Surgery @NeurosurgUCSF in March! We will be developing tools to study brain-body physiology and to explore treatment concepts for circuit disorders.
I am especially grateful to my graduate advisor Polina @AnikeevaLab, Kwanghun, and my postdoctoral advisor @KarlDeisseroth for being incredible mentors. I am also grateful for all the support and guidance from friends and colleagues throughout my training.
We will be based at the UCSF Weill Institute for Neurosciences and will be recruiting research specialists (aprecruit.ucsf.edu/JPF04362), graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows. We are also affiliated with @UCSFPsychiatry and @UCSF_BTS. Please RT and/or reach out if interested!
Voltage imaging at behaviorally-relevant time scales come of age! Beautiful work, congratulations!
1. I’m excited to share our new work, conducted with my amazing mentor and advisor @KarlDeisseroth, on the synaptic basis of behavioral timescale plasticity. Online today @CellPressNews: cell.com/cell/fulltext/S0092…
