Seeing a lot of videos lately of auto drivers, cabbies, and airport staff being harassed for not speaking Marathi. But this will not help Marathi, Here is why;
First, the demographic reality. Hindi speakers are growing rapidly. In 1971, about 37% of Indians spoke Hindi natively. Today, that number is pushing past 46%. Meanwhile, the percentage share of most regional languages is dropping, purely because of lower birth rates in those states.
You can't reverse a national population trend by forcing a random auto-rickshaw driver to learn marathi.
Second, look at the economics. Financial hubs like Mumbai don't become global giants by staying isolated. They grow because they attract capital, talent and migrant labor from all over the country. Harassing service workers just creates friction. It hurts business and it hurts the poorest workers who are just trying to earn a daily wage.
Most importantly, what about the law? Article 19 of our Constitution gives every single citizen the right to move freely, live, and work anywhere in India. Turning language into a barrier for a gig worker's livelihood completely goes against this fundamental right.
If we want to preserve a language, we should do it through schools, literature, and cinema. Bullying a guy who is driving a cab for 14 hours a day isn't protecting culture, it's just harassment.
Every other creator is parroting AI generated scripts in reels, so monotonous and borderline irritating 😡
