Urban India ruled back then. Urban civility was the benchmark for personal accomplishment. Television showed slices of urban life like "Just Mohabbat," "Yeh Hai Raaz," "Banegi Apni Baat," and "Saans." Then some MF did the math and found that they could instantly monetise 90% of India's population that was dehati rather than wait for them to urbanise. When they gave up on urban India, urban India gave up on India itself, and looked to the West. Two lost decades later, we got Netflix.
