This guy is a virtue signalling grifter. Vande Mataram is not, in its literary construction, a prayer or religious ritual intended literally to summon or invoke Hindu deities. Rather, Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay uses the attributes, names, and imagery associated with Hindu goddesses to personify the motherland and describe its qualities. If the phrase "Vande Matram" is acceptable so is the rest! The central device is personification. The motherland is imagined as a living, maternal presence and is described through the symbolic vocabulary of Hindu religious tradition. Bankim is not simply addressing Goddess Durga as a separate divine being. He identifies the motherland itself with the qualities conventionally associated with Durga—power, protection and martial strength—and with Saraswati and Lakshmi—wisdom and prosperity. The point is to invest the abstract idea of the nation with a familiar and emotionally powerful symbolic form. The literal text: The verse says, “Tvam hi Durga dasa-praharana-dharini”—“You are indeed Durga, bearer of ten weapons.” The “you” is the motherland. The same passage attributes to the motherland the qualities of Vani (Saraswati) and Kamala (Lakshmi). Thus, the poem is not merely mentioning these deities; it is using their attributes as a vocabulary for describing the nation. The temple imagery: The line “Tomarai pratima gori mandire mandire”—roughly, “It is your image that we fashion in temple after temple”—makes the metaphor even more explicit. The object being represented in the temples is the motherland, rendered through the visual and devotional language of Hindu iconography. So the distinction matters.
