Yesterday, the Board of the Alliance of Forest Service Retired Fire Leaders (AFSRFL) sent a letter to our nation’s leaders calling attention to the federal response to wildfire. Our nation’s wildfire challenges demand a strong, effective, and firefighter-focused response.

New Start, California: The Floriston Fire is moving at an extreme rate of spread, with spot fires already reported 1 mile out. The fire is burning in Nevada county, California, and westbound I-80 has been closed. A very large order has gone in for Tankers, helicopters, crews, engines, and dozers. Full response underway. Winds are in the teens, with an RH in the low 20s. This thing is moving.

🔥🌬️ Weekend Weather Heads-Up | Frazier Mountain & Grapevine 📸 The Grapevine this evening — calm for now, but we’re watching the weekend winds. The National Weather Service @NWSHanford is highlighting the potential for elevated fire-weather conditions Saturday night into Sunday morning, with very dry conditions and stronger wind gusts possible across portions of the Valley and foothills. At this time, there is no Red Flag Warning for the Frazier Mountain/Grapevine area. This is simply an early heads-up as we watch how conditions develop. If you’re spending time outdoors this weekend, especially grilling, using a smoker, working with equipment, or doing anything that could create a spark, keep an eye on changing wind conditions and use extra care. We’ll continue watching the official forecasts along with what we’re actually seeing here on Frazier Mountain and along the I-5 corridor. Forecasts tell us what could happen. Observations tell us what did happen. Stay aware. Stay safe. And come enjoy the peace. 🩷 #CaLandBird #FrazierMountain #FrazierPark #Lebec #Grapevine #LosPadresNF #CAwx #California #MustLoveDirt

Sharing a post 🙏🥹🐾🐕‍🦺 On September 11, 2001, dogs served in different ways across the World Trade Center disaster — searching rubble, detecting danger, and guiding people through smoke-filled stairwells to safety. Apollo, an NYPD German Shepherd, searched the ruins of Ground Zero alongside rescue crews. Bretagne, a young Golden Retriever with Texas Task Force 1, worked through dust, twisted steel, and devastation. Years later, she became widely remembered as the last known surviving 9/11 search-and-rescue dog. Jake, a black Labrador who had once been abandoned and badly injured, grew up to become a certified search-and-rescue dog. After 9/11, he spent days working through the wreckage at Ground Zero. Sirius, a Port Authority Police yellow Labrador trained to detect explosives, was inside the World Trade Center that morning. His handler, Officer David Lim, secured him before rushing to help others evacuate. Lim survived. Sirius did not. He became known as the only police dog killed in the 9/11 attacks. And then there were Roselle and Salty. They weren’t searching the rubble. They were guide dogs. Roselle helped her blind handler, Michael Hingson, escape from the 78th floor of the North Tower. Salty helped his blind handler, Omar Rivera, descend from the 71st floor. Through darkness, noise, fear, crowded stairwells, and chaos, they kept moving. Six dogs. Six very different stories. Search dogs. Police dogs. Guide dogs. None of them knew the meaning of terrorism. None understood why that morning had changed America forever. They simply did what they had been trained to do — and stayed beside the people who depended on them. More than two decades later, their names still deserve to be remembered. Apollo. Bretagne. Jake. Sirius. Roselle. Salty. They searched. They guided. They served. Never forget September 11, 2001. 🇺🇸🐾 #September11 #911 #NeverForget #GroundZero #SearchAndRescue #K9 #GuideDogs #HeroDogs #Apollo #Bretagne #Jake #Sirius #Roselle #Salty

Many of our #LACoFD firefighters, including Fire Chief Anthony C. Marrone and Chief Deputy Jon O’Brien, are in #NewYork today to show their support on this solemn 25th Remembrance of 9/11. Across #LACounty today, our men and women will also be in attendance at multiple remembrance ceremonies to honor and pay tribute to the nearly 3,000 innocent lives taken at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and on Flight 93, including 343 firefighters and 71 law enforcement officers who made the ultimate sacrifice. We will #NeverForget.

Today marks 25 years since the tragic events that took place on September 11, 2001. Firefighters from the Angeles National Forest joined the Los Angeles Fire Department and many partner agencies at Los Angeles City Hall this morning. We honored the lives lost, the heroes that rushed into danger and all those forever changed by the events of that day. We will never forget 🇺🇸 #September11 #NeverForget #NationalFallenFirefighters

I couldn’t agree more with Chief Garcia’s message.
The United States 🇺🇸 (Fed/State/Local) can and must do better to build a system that’s better trained, better equipped and better led to meet this challenge. A more purpose built system with a more robust and more resilient workforce for the future. The United States Wildland Fire Service led by proven leaders such as Chief Fennessy is a giant step toward this future. Our legacy system and the great wildland firefighters that do this work have done a tremendous job but our current and future challenges will demand much more for more of the year across more of the country. This future system must be prepared for more risk reduction work AND more wildfire response both! 🇺🇸🔥

As of today, 09/09, the National Preparedness Level has decreased to 3 (PL3). This decrease is due to continued improving fire weather conditions across multiple geographic areas, increasing availability of all nationally shared resource types and light ordering through the NICC.
