Crunched the numbers on running costs for yesterday on my home @vaillantuk heat pump running off the @OVOEnergy Heat Pump Plus 15p/kWh tariff
With temperatures around 0°, it was needing to produce high flow temps, plus also dealing with regular defrosts, so COP was only 3 (1/3)
40.3kWh’s used over the 24 hours to keep the house warm and water hot, cost a total of £6.04. Compared to a gas boiler running at 90% efficiency on 6p/kWh, which would have cost £7.95 to pruduce the 132.5kWh required to achieve the same level of energy as the heat pump (2/3)
And lo, there will be no more gas burnt inside these walls. Expect maybe flambéing the odd crêpe suzette (unlikely). Now just need to get @OctopusEnergy to remove our gas meter #renewables #singas #electrification
5 weeks on and @OctopusEnergy still not managed to organise the removal of the meter, instead just passing us around various departments that don’t know how to make it happen.

A pretty straightforward @_heatgeek HP install last week, only one radiator replacement required and looks like it will be running at around 42°. This client also took the opportunity to move to an induction hob at the same time, so so completely redundantifying the gas supply 💚
8 cast iron radiators removed today, which were originally installed 90 YEARS AGO 😳

Bit of a nightmare this one, discovered half the house was on a 1-pipe, plus it was leaking, so spent 3 days repiping the 7 affected rads. Back tomorrow to commission 😮💨
Fairly typical but depressing #ASHP service this. Transportation bracket left in, despite massive bright yellow label. Filter on the flow, doing nothing to protect the heat exchanger. Huge bills, poor hydronic design, on/off controls, a poor attempt at weather compensation.
It goes on… rubbish insulation, pipes not sleeved or insulated as they go through the wall. The homeowners have struggled with flow balance, noise from the outdoor unit, cold rooms and high bills.
Didn’t plan to build a decorative base as it will be mostly hidden behind a fence, but couldn’t do any internal work today so used my time making the outside look Elite AF #heatgeekelite #heatgeek @vaillantuk
Big houses need big pipes! To efficiently heat with a heat pump, you need large diameter pipework to minimise the frictional resistance. Each heat pump has a combination of 35mm and 40mm to get to the plant room, with 42mm flow and return required for the 18kW radiator circuit 🤯
