Big day for the Web: Chrome just shipped WebGPU without flags. Someone on @nomic_ai's GPT4All discord asked me to ELI5 what this means, so I'm going to cross-post it here—it's more important than you'd think for both visualization and ML people. (thread) developer.chrome.com/blog/we…

We held a reading group on Transformers (watched videos / read blog posts / studied papers by @giffmana @karpathy @ch402 @amaarora @JayAlammar @srush_nlp et al.), and now I _finally_ roughly understand what attention does. Here is my take on it. A summary thread. 1/n

Being a great engineer isn’t just about making the right tradeoffs. It’s also about recognizing when you made the wrong tradeoffs and correcting them.

Wisdom from Jensen Huang: Strategy is not about what you will do. It's about what you will sacrifice - what you will give up in order to focus on the most important thing.

The idea that free time is bad is one of the greatest lies you’ve been told. Free time is a “call option” on future interesting opportunities. When you have free time, you have the headspace and bandwidth to pursue new ideas. Free time increases your serendipity surface area.

My 14 month old daughter calls the turkeys that sometimes fly into our back yard "patos" (Spanish for 'duck'), and I'm ok with it 🦃

Before you begin, think as if you are a lazy person. Assume the competition will work harder. Your only chance is a better strategy. After you begin, work as if you are a dumb person. Assume the competition is smarter and more talented. Your only chance is to outwork them.

A disruptive innovation is *not* better along the axes that existing customers are evaluating. It's often *worse*. But it's better along a *different* axis. Often, a disruptive innovation is less powerful but much cheaper.

My dog went into the recycling again while I took my daughter to daycare. When I came home he was already in his crate; he knows he spends the morning there when he does that. However then I cut some cheese for breakfast (he always get some) and he regretted his mistake.

Resolving merge conflicts in @AtomEditor is a delightful experience. Great UI design!

When we leave the house, I think my dog performs a cost-benefit analysis of whether it is worth it to reach in the recycling container and get the heavy cream carton, destroy it, and lick all the remaining cream. Compared to minor punishment, it is worth it every time!

I talk to my baby daughter exclusively in Spanish. However, the dog is a faster learner: he already knows 'perrito', 'paseo', and 'cena'. To be fair, my daughter looks at the dog when we say 'perrito', so she's catching up.
