What is socket activation in systemd? 🤔
One of the key applications of systemd is to start and manage long-running background processes - daemons. Daemons are registered as systemd service units and typically start at boot.
However, if a service isn't needed immediately after boot and exposes a TCP or Unix socket API, it's more efficient to start it only when the first client connects. This technique is called socket activation.
The most fascinating part is how it's implemented - there is no magic, but you need to know the trick.
The listening socket is created as usual, but it's systemd itself that opens it. Once the first client arrives, systemd executes the daemon and passes it the socket's file descriptor. So the only "unusual" thing the daemon does is call socket.fromfd(SD_LISTEN_FDS_START) instead of creating a new socket itself.
Practice configuring socket activation for daemons with:

Happy hacking!

Smart code is needed only in a very small share of practical cases, such as performance optimizations of hot loops. The rest of the code must be easy to read, understand, debug and maintain. AI must be taught to generate simple code most of the time.

Git.

I am hosting a free live workshop on Building Decision Layers for AI Agents with Jev.
A lot of agent workflows still use general-purpose LLMs for small decisions that do not require generated text. Things like:
→ Which model should handle this request?
→ Is this tool call risky?
→ Is this retrieved result relevant?
→ Should the agent continue, stop, or ask for human approval?
In this workshop, I will explain how Jev can be used as a decision layer around an AI agent, where the model handles bounded semantic judgments while normal code keeps control over the final action.
We’ll cover practical use cases including:
- model routing
- tool-risk gating
- retrieval and relevance checks
- verification and supervision
- escalation and human approval
I will also walk through a hands-on implementation and share results from my own experiments comparing Jev with a general-purpose LLM on latency, cost, and decision behavior.
The goal is not only to understand how Jev works, but also where it actually fits inside an agent architecture, when deterministic code is still better, and when you still need a full reasoning model.
The workshop is completely free, but seats are limited.
Book your seat from the link in the comments.

Proud of what we have built and excited for what we have already planned. I will shamelessly steal the mantra from old Facebook days. The journey is 1% done.
Three years ago, we started Restate because we felt that building reliable distributed applications was just too hard. We were solving the same problems around failures, recovery, and consistency again and again.
Today, I'm excited to share that we've raised a $20M Series A led by Singular with participation from Redpoint Ventures and Capital One Ventures.
The need for solutions like Durable Execution has only grown since we started. Today, the majority of new Restate use cases are AI agents: long-running processes, coordinating across many tools and APIs, that need to keep working correctly through all sorts of failures and interruptions, coordinate sub-agents, or schedule work.
At the same time, our customers have pushed Restate into places that expanded our own view of what Durable Execution could become. Replit moved the execution of Replit Agent onto Restate. DOSS runs high volumes of enterprise workflows on Restate and Fortune 500 institutions are using Restate for complex transactional workflows.
We think this is just the beginning and excited to build what we believe will be a fundamental pillar of all infrastructure in the future.

I noticed that overcomplicated systems do not appear out of blue. They grow from simple systems by applying "innocent" changes, where every such change increases the complexity of the system by a very small bit.
Keep an eye on every change you apply to your system, and reject changes, which increase the complexity of the system even by a small bit.
This rule applies to everything - software projects, organisations, processes, physical systems, etc.
