Hot tip for grad students: If you see a million red flags, don’t think “it’ll be different for me.” It won’t, and you’ll be sad. #gradschool #PhDChat #hubris

A new thread about a series of papers in legitimate scientific journals, all from the same author. These papers have all been peer-reviewed, but no editor or peer reviewer noticed a huge problem. Warning: this might make your jaw drop.

This sentiment is exactly why I’m in favor of grad student unionization (and other formal measures of institutional support for grad students). My advisor was great. Your advisor is great. But we’ve all heard horror stories, and unions can help. xitter.cf/gregorcorp/status/1110…
#WGA WRITERS: most of us actually like our agents quite a lot. But the lack of rules in place for abuse means we’re all at risk at some point. Just cause there’s good stock brokers doesn’t mean we don’t need the SEC. give the guild the tools it needs to negotiate VOTE YES

With Fei Chen's lab, we introduce Slide-seq, for genome-wide expression profiling in tissue slices at 10-micron resolution. A single scientist can prepare dozens of slides in one day. Developed by two amazing students, @SGRodriques and Bob Stickels. biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/…

Hey friends, I upset some folks on the last Sawbones with my use of the phrase “off the reservation”. I never stopped to consider the origin of the saying and it is, no surprise, disrespectful to Native Americans. I’m obviously embarrassed and terribly sorry. Won’t happen again.

This morning, I received an email from my PhD advisor that was so encouraging and kind, it made me tear up a bit. I finished my PhD almost 14 years ago. Great mentors are mentors for life. If you’re just starting out, choose your PhD advisor wisely. You deserve a great mentor.

I don't know why this is on my heart to say, but for my Ph.D. students out there who doubt themselves, their ideas, and their work - stop that shit. You're dope af. Your work is dope af. Your ideas are dope af. And you're brilliant Now go finish that research so you can chill.

Thanksgiving is a day of survival and rebirth. It is Lincoln's day -- and the best American holiday. It’s been my tradition to explain the history of Thanksgiving to my foreign friends -- not the creation myth, but the real meaning. We need to remember. So sharing here. /1
