Today, #November4, 2026, #BobDylan was received in audience by Pope Leo XIV. Together with the editor of L'Osservatore Romano, I accompanied him to the Apostolic Palace. The meeting had the feel of history about it, and at every step I had the sense that anything could happen. Speaking of peace, Leo brought up "Go Away You Bomb." In 1963, Izzy Young, who ran the Folklore Center in Greenwich Village, was putting together a songbook against the atomic bomb; Dylan showed up the next day with the lyrics, typed. In the song, a man talks to the bomb, insults it, orders it to leave. The book never came out, and Dylan never recorded the song. In 2014, the typescript went on the block at Christie's and found no buyer, but the lyrics were published, and so a song that was never sung made its way to a pope's desk, in the company of Dorothy Day, Giorgio La Pira, and Stanislav Petrov, the Soviet officer who, in 1983, declined to pass on a missile alert that the computers insisted was real. Leo is an Augustinian. In 1967, on John Wesley Harding, Dylan had dreamed of that saint. In "I Dreamed I Saw St. Augustine," the narrator watches Augustine searching for those who have already sold their souls, witnesses his martyrdom, and realizes, with horror, that he is one of the crowd that put him to death. He wakes alone, in tears. The model was the old ballad about Joe Hill, the labor organizer executed by firing squad in Utah in 1915; Dylan put the Bishop of Hippo in his place and turned a rallying cry into an unwitting confession about our tendency to silence those who bring us the truth. Born in Chicago in 1955, Prevost grew up on the American music of those years. Jim Musselman, a classmate of his at Villanova and a Dylan devotee, recalls that the two of them talked about music a great deal, and that it was Musselman who got him to read an essay pointing to Dylan as the poetic talent of his generation. The Pope who introduced himself from the loggia of St. Peter's as "a son of St. Augustine" knows Dylan's music, and Dylan was glad to meet the American Pope.

A 42-year-old bug just got patched. C-Kermit is the serial and network communications suite that started at Columbia University in the 1980s, and people still use it to talk to embedded, legacy and vintage machines. It just got three security advisories, one of them for remote code execution. John Goerzen restarted the project as Open Kermit after longtime maintainer Frank da Cruz retired in 2025. A code-quality sweep turned up buffer overflows in the telnet and FTP clients, shell injection in the Kermit server's REMOTE WHO and REMOTE SPACE commands, a login bypass in the IKSD server, and arbitrary file writes during transfers. The oldest flaw dates to C-Kermit 4.0 in 1985 and appears in 1984's Unix Kermit too. Goerzen's own summary: "There is no safe version of C-Kermit." Back when he first found the old bug, he joked on Mastodon: "Take that, PHP. Bugs since 2012? Pfff. Modern." He also says the real-world risk is low, since most people run Kermit over serial lines and the only known public Kermit server is already patched. Every release up to 11.0.514 is affected. The fix is C-Kermit 11.1.515, and CVE IDs are still being assigned.

FAT32, the file system your USB sticks and SD cards have been quietly putting up with since the 90s, is getting up to a 265x speedup in Linux 7.4. And the fix is basically "stop doing it one at a time." Matheus Alves de Almeida from UFRGS in Brazil noticed that when you preallocate space on FAT (fallocate with FALLOC_FL_KEEP_SIZE), the kernel grabbed clusters one by one in a while loop. On a sync mount, that means writing the FAT table back to disk for every single cluster. Tens of thousands of tiny trips to the disk just to reserve a few megabytes. His patch swaps the loop for a single fat_add_clusters() call. Net change in fs/fat/file.c: +4 lines, -6 lines. The numbers: sixteen 16 MiB files with 4 KiB clusters on a sync mount went from 92.489 seconds to 0.348 seconds. Even without sync, it's 5x to 19x faster. In his words: "The improvement is especially large on synchronous mounts, where the new code can batch FAT updates instead of synchronously handling each cluster allocation separately." It won't make ordinary file copies faster. It's preallocation only, so think embedded devices, cameras and anything that reserves space up front. Andrew Morton sent it to Linus in his non-MM pull, and it's now in Linux 7.4.

On This Day | In 1977, VAX/VMS was born. At a shareholder meeting, DEC, the Digital Equipment Corporation, released VMS v1.0 the first version of what we later would call OpenVMS, along with the VAX 11/780 architecture which increased the PDP-11 address space. #OTD #OnThisDay

1986. Willie Dixon, Little Richard, Bo Diddley and Chuck Berry together at Berry Park, Chuck's place in Wentzville, Missouri. They gathered while Taylor Hackford was making Hail! Hail! Rock 'n' Roll, the film built around Chuck's 60th birthday concerts at the Fox Theatre in St. Louis on October 16, 1986, with Keith Richards leading the band. Four men who wrote a big part of the rock and roll rulebook, in one frame. 🎸 Which of these four had the biggest influence on rock? 🎸 👇️

Did you know there were two official versions of Zaxxon for the Commodore 64? Sega released one on cartridge. Synapse Software released another on disk and cassette (US Gold / Synsoft in the UK). Most players agree the Synapse version is the better one: the ship and shots move at a consistent speed, and the controls and sound are more polished. The Sega cart is a bit closer to the arcade look, but the gameplay is less even. Which one did you play?
