Dr. Hosea Nelson is a professor of chemistry at @Caltech and PI of ELECTRA, the Electron Diffraction Cloud Laboratory for Research and Autonomy. ELECTRA is one of 20 cloud labs being built across the country with funding from the National Science Foundation.
Molecules are invisible, and identifying them is a bottleneck in science. ELECTRA is built around microcrystal electron diffraction, a technique that lets chemists see molecular structures, and aims to run it autonomously and at scale.
They chose Ginkgo to help make ELECTRA an autonomous lab.
Dr. Nelson explains how Ginkgo’s RAC system will let his team prepare tens of thousands of samples on a single grid, and why chemistry has to build its data ecosystem from scratch.

Dr. Bill Bentley is PI for the Collaborative for the Realizaton of Autonomous Biomanufacturing, also known as the CRAB Lab, at the University of Maryland. The CRAB Lab is one of 20 cloud labs being built across the country with funding from the National Science Foundation.
The CRAB Lab is developing data-rich measurement techniques new to biotech that are suited specifically for machine learning and AI.
They chose Ginkgo to help make the CRAB Lab an autonomous lab.
Dr. Bentley explains how Ginkgo's RAC system helps them "leapfrog" the lab development process, bring down production cost, and create new types of medicines and molecules that serve the greater good.

A new @Nature technology feature looks at how labs are using cell-free protein synthesis to speed up the design-build-test cycle with offerings like our CFPS kits 👉 hubs.la/Q04zrWwl0
@Ginkgo Reagents general manager Cyntiha Collins explains how our Premium kit adds a solubility enhancer for proteins that are large, insoluble or need extra help folding. Just add DNA and water. And for the disulfide-bonded proteins that need an oxidizing hand to fold right, our new CFPS Disulfide kit is now available in beta.
Earlier this year, we ran 36,000 CFPS experiments over six months on our autonomous lab, Nebula. @OpenAI's GPT-5 designed each round, Nebula ran the plates, and overall we cut reaction costs by 40% compared to the state of the art. That work is exactly what powers our Economy kit, which you can read about and buy today.

Autonomous labs don't just automate work that used to be manual. They automate every separate piece of automation into an integrated structure that runs on the same software.
A RAC is a Reconfigurable Automation Cart. It is the fundamental unit that connects instruments into an autonomous lab.
Ginkgo Automation Engineer Rashard Thornhill is back with "What's in the RAC? Pt. 2" to talk about the VCode, one of over 70 instruments that make up our autonomous lab in Boston.
Better data means better models means faster drug discovery. Ginkgo Datapoints is excited to support the Antibody Developability Consortium!
Today, along with @Apheris_AI, we're introducing the Antibody Developability Consortium, with @AbbVie, @argenxglobal, @LundbeckUS, and @TakedaPharma as founding members.
The Consortium helps pharmaceutical and biotech companies predict manufacturability and developability risks earlier by building the field’s largest standardized antibody developability dataset.

Excited that @EliLillyandCo TuneLab companies will have access to @Ginkgo's ADME and Antibody developability services.
Our ADME-one service is $199 for a full tier 1 ADME panel. This usually costs 10X if ordered from WuXi or other providers! Robotic labs in the US offer better prices and speed than offshoring for these key assays! 🧵
We're excited to announce that Ginkgo Datapoints has entered into a new agreement with Lilly TuneLab, a collaborative AI/ML drug discovery platform created by @EliLillyandCo. TuneLab supports biotech innovation by enabling participating companies to access AI/ML drug discovery models trained on decades of Lilly's proprietary research data.
Ginkgo Datapoints will provide discovery data generation services, including small molecule developability (ADME) and antibody developability testing, to TuneLab companies.
Ginkgo’s delivery of standardized assay protocols across the TuneLab ecosystem is expected to enable AI/ML models to learn more efficiently, increasing the overall impact of the TuneLab platform. New TuneLab members can now submit Datapoints’ generated data to access additional platform model benefits.

It is pretty amazing to be able to design binders on @tamarindbio, click a button and have those designs made and characterised in vitro by robots @Ginkgo
There is no way automation and AI do not now dramatically accelerate drug R&D

When I read that an internal OpenAI model solved the Navier-Stokes problem, I realized it would be very hard for us to know if that model possesses similar "millennium intelligence" in biology (even if it does!). "Curing disease" is a noble goal, but we cannot validate proposed treatments rapidly enough to use it as a frontline eval for new models.
Here, @SGRodriques and I propose Millennium Problems for Biology - meaningful, difficult challenges in biology whose solutions should be straightforward and quick to validate in a wetlab. If a model were to solve any of these, I would know that machine intelligence was capable of fundamentally reshaping humanity's ability to make, measure, and model biology.
Please see details of the problems in the thread below, and see our website for the permanent home of the list. I encourage the community to red-team these challenges to make sure they are adequately specified and difficult to cheat, and propose additional challenges to add. We will subsequently update the list in response to feedback.
In light of the progress in mathematics, we at Edison Scientific and FutureHouse have assembled a set of Millennium Problems for Biology. They are chosen to be very hard to solve but very easy to validate in a simple laboratory environment. Any of these, if solved, would mark a major advance in biotechnology, and most of them would contribute materially towards curing disease. These are, in some sense, the “last reasonable eval” for AI in biology. This was work primarily by @MichaelaThinks and myself, with contributions from many others.
Short descriptions below. The full descriptions of the problems with acceptance criteria are at the Bio Millennium Problems website, linked in the next post. Share more if you have ideas. If they meet our criteria, we’ll add them to our list (with attribution and permission).

💯All roads for AI science lead to real labs.
Most of science is observation-limited! AI will need to run experiments if we want to learn faster in the world of atoms.

Ginkgo Computational Biologist @RoryKirchner noticed that the broker schedule for our autonomous lab, Nebula, looked like music production software.
So naturally he turned all of the lab instruments into MIDI instruments. The result is the first ever musical track made by an autonomous lab.
Introducing… DJ Nebula.

Excited to build out an autonomous lab for @novonordisk at their R&D site in Waltham, MA.
This is the way.
We're proud to announce that Ginkgo has been selected to build an autonomous lab powered by its Reconfigurable Automation Cart (RAC) architecture at @novonordisk’s new R&D site in Waltham, Massachusetts.
The agreement marks an expansion of the relationship between the two companies. Novo has already worked with Ginkgo as an external R&D partner, and now adds Ginkgo as a provider of the automation tools and software that power its internal laboratories for U.S. R&D.

Cell-free extract normally needs a cold chain. @PSCBioTechnique in York, PA freeze-dried ours and kept ~90% of activity—easily clearing the bar set at 75%.
Room-temperature extract means manufacturing that can go where the patients are, without the cost of refrigerated shipping and cold storage.

Massachusetts is one of the strongest biotech hubs in the world, and it's exactly why we built Ginkgo here.
A new @masslivenews feature looks at why the state's research economy keeps thriving, even amid federal funding cuts and rising costs. The numbers back it up: R&D contributed $45 billion to Massachusetts' economy in 2023, and the sector has doubled in size over the past ten years, three times the national growth rate.
Our CEO, @jrkelly, points to that same foundation – deep research talent, world-class universities, the infrastructure to match, and quality of life – that allows innovation to thrive in Boston. Here, Ginkgo is building the world's largest autonomous lab network.
