Curious to bring in a guy whose specialty is the secondary and pass defense to help a guy whose specialty is the secondary and pass defense
The irony of bringing in a seasoned consultant to help is that, to me, this is what needed to happen on offense from the jump. David Blough is a 3rd-year coach whose top role was AQB coach. Jones has been around the block and was a DC at LSU. He also has a defensive-minded HC. But, more eyes on the situation can't hurt.

Steve Wilks finished with a 6-6 record as interim head coach of the Panthers in 2022 And I know the Commanders are not suggesting any plans to remove DQ in season But this hire sure makes it easier to name an interim HC, with experience, without disrupting the rest of the staff

Steve Wilks consulting during the week and not being present on game days is similar to what the Browns did with Mike Vrabel a couple of years ago

Daronte Jones now has the support of experienced defensive coordinators Ken Norton Jr. John Pagano, and Steve Wilks (not to mention DQ and Eric Henderson). Meanwhile David Blough (with respect to Anthony Lynn)
This has been planned all season, enacted now.

To help Dan Quinn and staff on defense, the Commanders hire the guy who cut his teeth learning how to run defenses at multiple stops under his mentor Ron Rivera, the guy the Commanders fired as head coach for Dan Quinn
The #Commanders have hired Steve Wilks to work with the defensive coaches under Dan Quinn and Daronte Jones, per me and @RapSheet. The decision to hire Wilks was made last month. He started last week. Wilks will help with game planning. He won't be with the team on game days.

Many factors of course go into pocket time. But 1.5 seconds for a Jayden is wild. Almost a whole second less than Washington QBs have had the last couple of years. And since at least 2018, no NFL QB has had a pocket time of less than 2 seconds
Jayden Daniels has, BY FAR, the shortest amount of time before the pocket collapses in the entire NFL. League average is 2.3 seconds. The #Commanders give Daniels 1.5 seconds. It is a huge issue that is holding the offense back.

Crazy to think last night was probably the last time we'll ever see both Tress Way and Terry McLaurin on the field together for Washington

Look at McNichols in pass protection on the Daniels completion to Burks Have missed this, glad to have J Mac back

On paper no offensive giveaways (save failed 4th down attempts) seems like a good stat. In reality, may be time to start risking them
Dan Quinn says he likes that they takes care of the football but he wants to see more explosive plays from the offense. "You want to just dig deep" to @JPFinlayNBCS question. Doesn't sound like any changes are coming.

Agreed. And I'll add it has not been like Dan Quinn during any of his time here to deflect blame or make up an excuse
I will take the stance that Dan Quinn did in fact know it was 4th down entering the play. He would have 100% communicated with the OC well prior to the 4th down play on what distance they would go for it vs kick a field goal. And the 4th down decision on 4th and 2 there is strongly supported by data. They win the game ~10% more often when choosing to go for it vs kick a FG. (Win 11% of the time going for it, win 10% of the time kicking a field goal) Would imagine there was temporary confusion at the conclusion of the play after seeing the flag and the throwaway. You want to be prepared on the headset if they rule it a presnap penalty, and if they did you’d kick a field goal on 4th and 7 instead. Throwaway on 4th down by the QB is really the biggest issue here.

The last part of this rant invalidates anything else said So he smiles, so what. Only an idiot would think he doesn't care, isn't competitive and doesn't want to win And how you are just going to guess what's said when all you see is half his helmet with his back to Jayden
"You cannot throw the ball out of bounds on 4th-and-2," Kevin Sheehan says about Jayden Daniels' terrible throwaway in the first half of the Commanders' loss to the 49ers. "Basic football situational awareness. Stunning to me how clueless he was last week and was at the end of the play last night."

David Blough, notably linked to Ben Johnson philosophically, is seeing his newly implemented offense beset by multiple offensive penalties It's perhaps worth noting similarities to where Johnson himself was at roughly the same point in the season last year, his first in Chicago

David Blough has had blunders and things I don't quite understand. But I've got to say that after watching the All-22 of the passing game, he got a lot of guys open last night. I wrote down "wide open" 10 times on different passes. One (first throw of game was more of a coverage bust) but he schemed dudes open last night vs SF's zone all night.

I said a few week ago, I saw Peyton in the next year or two finally moving into an NFL team front office in an EVP of Football Operations type role

Commanders plan to start selling PSLs for their new stadium beginning in 2027. Dan Quinn as the head coach is sadly not going to be inspiring to most folks debating whether to hand over thousands of hard-earned dollars.
Josh Harris has some big short term and long term decisions to make.

Commanders have 5 takeaways for +4 turnover ratio in their last 3 games with 2 losses and 1 tie (and touchdown)

All I'm saying is McNichols would have picked up that block
Another confusing route tree by David Blough at the end of the game. This play never had a chance. All #Commanders receivers running downfield and not working the middle of the field. There would have been plenty of time to clock it after. #RaiseHail

Just like I think it's too soon to close the book on Blough, I think it's too soon to fit Declan Doyle for a gold jacket.. The rising HC candidate does have a strong tie to one particular Commanders coach whose father's accomplishments in DC carry a lot of weight
