June is Seniors Month! 🎉
At the NIA, we believe growing older is something to be celebrated. Seniors Month is a powerful reminder of the resilience, experience and ongoing contributions of older adults in Canada.
Older adults are at the heart of our communities—serving as caregivers, leaders, volunteers and knowledge keepers. To truly honour these contributions, we must also advocate for the systems, policies and supports that enable people to age with dignity, confidence and respect.
This June, join us in celebrating older Canadians and reaffirming our commitment to creating communities, workplaces and services that support people to thrive at every stage of life.

The most powerful CPP reform is right under our noses – and it’s cost-efficient
In a new op-ed in the Globe and Mail, Doug Chandler, Talia Bronstein, and Dr Bonnie-Jeanne MacDonald from the National Institute on Ageing (NIA), outline the Pension Delay Guarantee (PDG) — a simple idea that could significantly boost retirement income for Canadians.
💡 The concept: if someone delays claiming CPP and dies prematurely, the PDG would reimburse the difference between what was actually received, and what would have been received had benefits started at age 60
Why it matters:
• Delaying CPP can more than double monthly benefits
• Fear of “dying early” leads many to claim CPP early
• The PDG would remove this psychological barrier and improve fairness
• It can be funded within the CPP at no additional taxpayer cost
With more Canadians entering retirement than ever before, making the most of CPP has never been more important.
