SWGfL welcomes this week’s announcement that social media companies will soon be legally required to prevent users from promoting self-harm online. Under new rules, platforms will be obliged to block such harmful content before it appears, rather than relying on removal after publication.
This important shift brings self-harm material into line with existing requirements around suicide-related content under the Online Safety Act.
David Wright CBE, CEO of SWGfL, said:
''Preventing harmful content before it reaches users is a necessary framework to improve protections against this type of content. But these commitments must be matched with robust enforcement. It is not enough for the law to demand change, platforms must be held to account for how they respond, and the Online Safety Act must be equipped to ensure promises translate into real protections. Without enforcement, the risk remains that harmful content will continue to slip through the cracks.''

At the Revenge Porn Helpline, we would like to extend our congratulations to Georgia Harrison after being appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE). This is recognition of the work Georgia has done to highlight the impact of intimate image abuse, give a voice to individuals who have also suffered at the hands of perpetrators, and influence positive legislation.
Sophie Mortimer (Manager of the Revenge Porn Helpline) said:
''At the Revenge Porn Helpline, we’ve seen firsthand how damaging intimate image abuse can be. We also know how rare and vital it is to have a public advocate like Georgia, someone who not only understands the reality, but actively challenges the systems that allow this abuse to persist. Her work has helped to reduce stigma, spark difficult but necessary conversations, and ensure that victims know they are not alone. Calls to the helpline increased during Georgia’s trial, which is testimony alone that it gave courage to those to reach out for support.
Georgia’s MBE is more than a personal accolade; it is a symbol to all those fighting to end intimate image abuse. We are grateful for her partnership, her persistence, and her refusal to back down in the face of adversity. Congratulations again, Georgia. You’ve truly made a difference that will be felt for years to come.''
