4/5 💪 Why didn’t I get my flu and COVID vaccines together? You absolutely CAN get both at the same visit. I personally space them out because I’ve had post-vaccine reactions before. It helps me distinguish side effects. And yes, I used different arms. Both deserve a turn! 😂

Our study on virus-specific T cell activation in Long COVID (LC) is up on bioRxiv! We identify a subset of people with LC with persistently elevated activation of CD8 T cells targeting spike and/or EBV lytic antigens, consistent with viral persistence. biorxiv.org/content/10.64898…

Beth Dobbin has revealed she now spends more than 22 hours a day in bed as she battles myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME). The 32-year-old, who represented Great Britain at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, told BBC Sport that she wanted to raise awareness of the condition even though the interview itself could set her back for months. ME is a chronic, fluctuating disease that causes symptoms including sleep problems, pain, difficulties with thinking and memory. Even everyday activities, such as having a conversation or being exposed to bright lights or loud noises, can trigger a “crash”, with symptoms lasting anywhere from 24 hours to several months. There is currently no known cure for ME and no specific treatment. Read more 👉 athleticsweekly.com/news/bet…

Could a metabolite produced in the gut help protect the brain after stroke? Zhang et al. present “Kynurenic acid mitigates post stroke brain damage through the gut-brain neural circuit” via bit.ly/3UXVvLC This study identifies a previously unrecognised gut–brain neural circuit involving kynurenic acid (KYNA). Intestinal KYNA levels were reduced in patients with acute ischaemic stroke, and KYNA levels were associated with neurological recovery at three months in both training and validation cohorts. In experimental stroke models, oral KYNA supplementation improved poststroke cerebral injury by activating GPR35 on enteric neurons and triggering vagal signalling. This pathway ultimately influenced brain regions including the nucleus tractus solitarius, hippocampus and hypothalamus, promoting anti-inflammatory microglial polarisation and enhancing neuronal α7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor activity. The findings provide striking evidence that intestinal metabolites can influence neurological recovery through a defined gut–brain neural pathway and identify KYNA–GPR35–vagus signalling as a potential therapeutic avenue for stroke recovery. #GutBrainAxis #Microbiome

1/ We discovered something totally unexpected about the neural structure of consciousness that overturns decades of thinking on its biological basis and brings us significantly closer to the recipe for generating conscious awareness. Think GAMT, AGAT and SLC6A8 deficiency in children with developmental delay, particularly prominent speech impairment. 💊 Creatine supplementation can restore cerebral creatine in biosynthetic defects (GAMT/AGAT), but response in transporter deficiency is much more limited.

Could some rectal cancer patients skip chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery? The FDA has granted priority review to dostarlimab (a PD-1 immunotherapy) for untreated stage II–III dMMR/MSI-H locally advanced rectal cancer, with a decision expected by February 2027. The application is based on the global Phase 2 AZUR-1 study (n=154), where 6 months of dostarlimab alone met the primary endpoint of sustained clinical complete response at ≥12 months (cCR12). This builds on the landmark MSK NEJM experience showing striking complete-response rates in this biomarker-defined group. As a reminder, dMMR/MSI-H accounts for only about 5–10% of rectal cancers. AZUR-1 is single-arm, and priority review is not approval. Still, biomarker-driven organ preservation moving toward a regulatory label is a major milestone. ✅
