How disposable software becomes the norm
(originally posted at every.to/thesis-statements/a…
Ask ChatGPT to analyze a spreadsheet, and it might write and run a Python script to find the answer. Once you have the answer, you may never need that script again. That is just-in-time, disposable software, and I expect most software run in the cloud will soon look like it.
Today, we build applications around needs we can anticipate. We invest in code review, testing, and deployment pipelines because we expect people to keep using what we ship. When writing a program costs almost nothing and takes seconds, building one to answer a single question starts to make sense.
Source control matters less for programs nobody will revise. We’ll need verification that works as code is generated and executed, without a human reading every line. Permissions and spending limits have to hold even when the program was written moments before it ran, and we’ll still need a record of what it did.
Agents will also take over the infrastructure decisions engineers now make in tools like Terraform. One task needs a few seconds of compute; the next needs a powerful machine for days. The agent will acquire those resources through cloud APIs, within the task’s budget and security constraints, and release them when it’s done. This is application-defined compute: the software chooses its infrastructure as it does the work.
This will make it practical to solve problems that never justified a full software project. A task can have its own software, even if nobody ever needs to do it again.

I asked our agent for SaaStr AI Connect live with @HarryStebbings + @rodriscoll today if we wanted to move hosting ... where should we go?
It picked Render over Railway and Vercel. "My pick".
Honestly I had never heard of it. Maybe I should have, but I never had.
Now we'll test it -- first.
That's how you get leads in The Agent Age

Your agent isn't failing because it can't reason. It's failing because it has too many tools and no clarity on which to use.

Let sleeping CPUs lie. Unbilled.
@render Workflows charges for active CPU and memory, so your agent can wait on an LLM or tool call without paying for compute to keep it company.

OpenRouter now runs inside @render Workflows.
Stop putting LLM batches in your web service. Each prompt becomes its own task run, queued, retried, and fanned out by Render, with the model call routed by OpenRouter.

Proud to be @base44’s application cloud as they blow past $200M ARR at breakneck speed.
They’re proving that the world’s most ambitious companies can scale all the way without the hyperscaler complexity tax. @render takes you there.
We just blew past $200M ARR at @Base44
5 months after hitting $100M. We've released Base 1 in between.
i'm proud of the healthy business we're building,
being the only platform to own its entire stack (backend, models, etc) - which also allows us to move fast and be creative.
All credits go to a very special team that i'm having so much fun working with

Huh. @render is the most popular app in GitHub Marketplace, with nearly twice Lovable's install base.

Prediction: Within two years, AI agents will generate over half the new code running in the cloud, in real time.
They’ll choose where it runs, favoring high-level, deterministic APIs over clouds that require 40 low-level calls.
Machines will choose the next cloud abstraction.

AI API keys are the new cloud credentials, and attackers know it.
@render users can now connect to OpenAI and Anthropic with short-lived, automatically generated tokens. No long-lived keys sitting around waiting to leak.
It’s scary out there. We’ve got your back.
It is a truth universally acknowledged that an agent in possession of an AWS secret must be in want of a major security incident.
No longer, for agents running on @render. OIDC for AWS is here.

Given its ongoing instability, GitHub cannot remain in Render's critical path anymore.
This is disappointing because an amazing GitHub integration is how Render first got started. Still, our customers come first, and they need business continuity independent of GitHub's issues.

It was the first @render user conference and the team did a great job, not just speaker lineup and selected talks, but every part of the conference was well orchestrated, will _definitely_ attend the next time they are in SF.
