Looking for a post-doc position? Come work with the Nova team at the University of Sao Paulo that developed the UPF concept! You will work on the NutriNet Brasil study, one of the largest cohorts designed to study dietary patterns and health. Please share: fsp.usp.br/nupens/wp-content…

I find it somewhat arrogant that a group that did not develop the NOVA classification and UPF concept and clearly does not understand it, pretends to 'do it right.'
They should rather study and try to comprehend all the virtues of this classification: its simplicity, robustness, and applications. I don't think that project can be taken seriously. All my recognition to @CMonteiro_USP and @NUPENS_USP

To add to Chris's excellent thread below 👇, this is also a case of scientific colonialism - when a corporate backed group of European researchers seeks to co-opt the name and redesign the Nova food classification system developed by researchers from Latin America without their agreement nor involvement
The @novonordiskfond - which makes money from obesity drugs - is holding a meeting with food industry funded scientists to 'redefine' an unhealthy diet. This is bad for public health and more than 80 of the world's leading independent food scientists are calling for a boycott. 🧵

Grateful to 80+ colleagues worldwide for standing with our team at the School of Public Health, University of Sao Paulo—creators of the Nova classification and the UPF concept—against this regrettable attempt to discredit our work. Read their letter: drive.google.com/file/d/1SDW…

Ever heard the expression "Healthy ultra-processed foods"? based on their plant origin? Ultra-processing matters, independent of source.

Conclusion of the more recent study from the USP, Imperial College and IARC partnership: dietary guidelines promoting a plant-sourced diet should emphasize not only the reduction of meat, red meat, or animal sourced foods but also the need to avoid all UPF
