Trump’s losing battle with green energy. The Iran war and AI boom are strengthening the case for clean power, despite the president’s efforts to curb it. Since returning to the White House, Donald Trump has been on a mission to curb renewable energy in favour of fossil fuels, dubbing wind and solar the “scam of the century”. The US president’s One Big Beautiful Bill Act, passed last year, slashed tax credits on green investments which were introduced under his predecessor, Joe Biden. His administration has also pulled the US out of the Paris climate agreement for a second time and stalled routine approvals for more than 150 onshore wind projects. Wind power is for “stupid people” and offshore farms make whales go “a little bit loco”, the commander-in-chief has claimed. And yet America’s green energy build-out has proved remarkably resilient. In 2025, US utilities generated a record amount of electricity from renewable sources. This year, a record 45 gigawatts of clean-energy capacity is forecast to be added, according to S&P Global Energy. Despite Washington’s attacks on clean energy — as well as this year’s surge in fuel prices — global green-energy stocks have mostly outperformed their oil and gas counterparts since Trump’s second inauguration.
