Getting a video of a location is one thing. Knowing where that video came from is another. This is one of the parts of @vangrid_io I find interesting. When a capture is recorded, Vangrid creates a fingerprint containing information such as the content hash, a coarse location reference and timestamp. Those fingerprints are then grouped into a Merkle tree. The root of that tree is attested on Base using Ethereum Attestation Service. Why does that matter? Because someone can later verify that a particular fingerprint was included in that recorded batch without simply taking Vangrid’s word for it. You can check the cryptographic proof against the public ledger. But there’s an important distinction here. This proves the integrity and existence of the recorded fingerprint. It does not automatically prove that everything shown in the footage is true. Vangrid itself separates those two things. More advanced verification, including device attestation and independent verifiers, is still planned. That distinction is important when talking about what the system actually does today.
