XA4D-1 Skyhawk - the prototype A-4 during early testing: note it's one of the few occasions where one can see an unpainted, bare metal A-4. The prototype completed its inaugural flight on June 22, 1954, subsequently establishing a global speed record of 695.163 mph on October 15, 1955. The Skyhawk officially entered active military service on October 1, 1956. Equipped with five external hardpoints, the aircraft accommodates a diverse arsenal of missiles, bombs, and specialized munitions. Remarkably, it supports a payload capacity rivaling that of the World War II-era Boeing B-17 bomber and can deploy nuclear armament via low-altitude "loft" delivery methods. Furthermore, the platform pioneered the innovative "buddy" air-to-air refueling system, mitigating the reliance on dedicated tanker aircraft. Initial models utilized the Wright J65 turbojet, while the A-4E and subsequent variants incorporated the Pratt & Whitney J52 engine. Production concluded in February 1979, culminating in 2,960 total airframes manufactured for various operators, including 555 two-seat training variants. The Skyhawk was actively deployed across numerous global conflicts. Serving as the U.S. Navy's primary light-attack aircraft in the Vietnam War, it executed many of the initial American airstrikes. It also functioned as the Israeli Air Force's premier ground-attack platform throughout the War of Attrition and the Yom Kippur War. During the Falklands conflict, Argentine Skyhawks targeted Royal Navy warships, sinking the Type 42 destroyer Coventry and the Type 21 frigate Ardent. Furthermore, Indonesia utilized the aircraft for counterinsurgency operations in East Timor, and Kuwaiti Skyhawks engaged in active combat during Operation Desert Storm.
