Traditional, rigid hierarchical institutions are failing us. They incentivise self-interested behaviour, pitting us against each other, and leading to large, seemingly-intractable problems. Here's how I think we can do better, and why I'm working on it. A thread. 🧵 1/23

ok so... there was a 2 day hackathon at work last week... i built an infinite, 3D, ai native mmo called nocturne... it's set in the world of inkwell. the server capacity is... pretty good..? i tested it with 1000 connections in the cloud. it's written in a programming language i wrote (called ink). it uses polygons & gaussian splat *frostings* for the graphics. it has an adaptive music system that changes intensity and mood based on the gameplay. the combat is kind of realtime dnd-like? all of the npcs are powered by llms, you can talk to them, trade, fight them... they remember you..? they have little neural nets inside them and they optimise for survival and happiness. there's *trillions* of combinations of characters... *hundreds of millions* of spell combinations. all of the creatures have a genome, they reproduce and have mutations creating new creature types... you can catch them like in pokemon... there's semantic crafting and alchemy... you can be turned into a vampire and burn in the sunlight..? there's a day & night cycle... seasons... fires spread, rain puts them out, ice freezes over lakes... you can become a werewolf and infect others? or a weredragon? even a wererat. you can ride on goats, sheep, horses, eagles and dragons... aliens can abduct you or the farm animals... and when you do... you can discover and explore their home planets with different physics. there's giant colossal beasts to fight, demigods with trials that give you world changing powers... you can get portals in a bag that take you to home's you can customise like in tiny glade... oh and there's an api... so people can connect their local agents to it and build their own worlds... rift's open up and invasions happen. villages learn traditions and will fear you if you treat them badly... there's open pvp everywhere and you drop all of your gear if you die. if you try to do pvp in the main cities, then mages will spawn in and try to kill you. oh... there's also semantic scrying.. you can get any item and cast a spell and it opens a portal to the closest thing that is semantically similar... got a bone? maybe it'll take you to a graveyard... a log? a forest, etc. i feel like i haven't even *scratched the surface* with how deep this game is, but this post is pretty long... so... *dream bigger*.

By the way, you should stop using telegram to talk to your agents and roll your own matrix server. The element clients are great for threaded bot chats and you can mount it all on a VPS and have it fully persistent.

Website for Aussiefy coming soon. You can swap terms, and includes an MCP that you can point your agent at, if you don't want to install locally, that enables yarn mode.
G'day mate, wanna make ya text Aussie as f**k? I've open-sourced Aussiefy. It'll sort 'er out better than a kelpie on a mob of ratbag sheep. Slang, swearin' and yarn-spinnin', with dials for the lot. Point ya agent at it and let 'er rip. github.com/underware-gg/auss…

On Friday I found out that @Medieval_Tech did not make it into the upcoming 8 team @fabric_vc x @wintermute_t R[3]sidency cohort. I also found out, however, that we did make it into the final 14 teams out of over 3000 applicants. Back in August, our friends at the @StarknetFndn suggested @JoeJConway & I apply, and after 3 follow-up stages (3min Loom Video; 45 minute Interview; 20 minute Investment Committee Pitch) we fell short at the final hurdle. We were obviously disappointed, as the $300k investment was set to fast-track the build and deployment of our complete 8-camera Octopi setup, which you can see Joe has made great progress on over the last couple of weeks here xitter.cf/JoeJConway/status/2110… But beyond that disappointed, we’re incredibly uplifted by how far we got - and by the positive feedback we received from @LataPersson this week. The process itself was pretty tough. There was a short turnaround period between stages once you found out you’d progressed. The final round, for example, gave us less than a week to build and rehearse a 5 minute pitch for the investment committee. The best thing about that time pressure though, was that it expedited a necessary update of our story that reflects all the progress we’ve made in the last months. In the end, we were very pleased with what and how we delivered. Indeed, Lata’s feedback confirmed that our answers to the committee’s probing questions were strong and appropriate, and our failure to be selected was mostly a matter of being at an earlier stage than the teams that were. We’ve learnt not to bullshit those we’re pitching into believing things we haven’t proved yet. We have strong theses, a strong partnership with @Armored_MMA, a live fan-engagement product, a hardware MVP, a customer LOI, and a number of potential downstream commercial products that individually and combined expose us to huge markets, and make Medieval Tech an extremely venture-worthy business. The next step is for Octopi to be deployed to teach us which of those products, and in which combination, to pursue most aggressively. In that sense, our approach is organic and methodical, and has thus far produced great results. Medieval Tech is an infrastructure company turning human movement and interaction into machine-readable data in real-time. The pitch is strong and focused. If you’re an investor in promising pre-seed companies in the sports-tech, computer vision or blockchain space and want to learn more - reach out. We’d love to connect and tell you more about what we’re building.
I’d planned to spend the first half of this week getting the camera powered up and running through the Jetson. Twenty minutes later, it was working. In typical Jetson and Basler fashion, the bit I’d set aside days for took less time than making a cup of tea. So now I’m re-planning the next couple of days around redesigning our janky Frankenstein of a pipeline 😂 A very good problem to have. Thanks again to @Basler_AG and @nvidia for making it an easy ride so far. One camera. One feed. The bigger picture is coming into focus. #ComputerVision #MachineVision #EdgeAI #Robotics

Fittingly, a dinkum yarn is the best, but it's fun to go troppo. The hill climb continues. Yarn mode is a harness to support agents to aussiefy text, and which now consistently outperforms the deterministic engine on its own, and an unharnessed agent. Agents riff and fill gaps.

that's because alignment is a social practice not just an engineering problem you have to reinvent democracy to align models because we all have different perceptions of what is aligned and what isn't this means giving the populace a means to put into record training data that is intentionally meant to influence the model and the problem is AI labs simply do not want to do this the answer isn't even complex: it's belief staking where reputation is tied to the source over time that would also require tying the output of the models to these inputs via provenance. this is also something the AI labs simply do not want to do because they have already argued in court that it is impossible so they won't be held accountable to copyright law If you put on record something that either positively or negatively affects the output of the model it should be traced back to the source. This also gets to the heart of interp. To a human being, some part of a matrix being activated is meaningless. But citing the distribution of sources that lead to an output is interpretable. But again: AI labs simply do not want to do this.
there have not been fundamental advancements in alignment since RLHF. most of the stuff remains at the level of folk theory rather than scientific or engineering disciplines. the prediction that capabilities would race far ahead of interp and alignment has come true imo

Whadda ya reckon @GeoffreyHuntley
Hehehe. Next, goldilocks. Struth, once upon a bloody time, there was this little sheila called Goldilocks, right, and she was out wanderin' through the bush, mindin' her own business, when she got herself properly knackered. Buggered, she was. And hungry? Mate, she could've eaten a horse and chased the bloody jockey. Anyway, she's traipsin' along when she comes across this little house, smack-bang in the middle of nowhere. Gives the door a knock. Nothin'. Not a bloody peep. So she reckons, ah, bugger it, and lets herself in. As ya do. Well, stone the flamin' crows, there's three bowls of porridge sittin' on the table. Beauty, she reckons, don't mind if I do. Has a crack at the first bowl. "Bloody hell!" she says. "That's hotter than a shearer's armpit!" Tries the second. "Aw, get stuffed. That's colder than a witch's tit!" Then she gets stuck into the third bowl, and wouldn't ya bloody know it, it's just right. So she scoffs the lot. Doesn't leave so much as a bloody skerrick. Now, after all that, she fancies a bit of a sit-down. Tries the first chair. Too bloody big. Second chair? Too bloody hard. Third chair? Ah, you little ripper, just the ticket. But no sooner does she plonk her backside down than the whole bloody thing gives way underneath her. Crack! Arse over tit she goes. "Ah, bugger me dead," she says, pickin' herself up. "What a bloody shambles." By now she's absolutely rooted, so she wanders upstairs lookin' for somewhere to have a kip. First bed's too hard, second one's too soft, but the third? Mate, it's bloody perfect. So she curls up, pulls the blankets over herself, and she's out like a light. Well, wouldn't ya know it, along come the three bears, back from their morning constitutional. Papa Bear takes one look at the table and goes, "Oi! Who's been at me bloody porridge?" Mama Bear has a squiz at hers. "Well, bugger me, someone's been at mine an' all!" And Baby Bear, poor little bastard, takes one look at his bowl and starts carryin' on like a pork chop. "Some mongrel's eaten the bloody lot!" Then they wander into the loungeroom. "Oi!" bellows Papa Bear. "Some bugger's been sittin' in me chair!" "Mine too!" says Mama Bear, gettin' a bit shirty. Baby Bear looks at his chair, or what's bloody left of it, and just about spits the dummy. "Aw, you've gotta be bloody jokin'! Some drongo's smashed me chair to buggery!" Now the bears are properly spewin', so they head upstairs to see what other bloody mischief's been goin' on. Papa Bear looks at his bed. "Stone the crows! Some bastard's been sleepin' in me bed!" Mama Bear looks at hers. "Well, I'll be buggered. Mine too!" And then Baby Bear pipes up, "Oi, Dad! Some little sheila's been sleepin' in me bed, and the cheeky bugger's still bloody here!" Well, Goldilocks wakes up to find three great hairy bears standin' over her, lookin' none too pleased. "Aw, FUCK ME DEAD!" she screams. And before you can say Bob's your uncle, she's out of that bed, down the stairs, through the front door, and shootin' through like a Bondi tram. Didn't even stop to put her bloody shoes on. And as for the three bears? Well, Papa Bear reckons they oughta call the coppers, Mama Bear's still spewin' about the porridge, and Baby Bear just wants his bloody chair back. Goldilocks, meanwhile, never set foot in that neck of the woods again. And fair dinkum, can't say I bloody blame her. The end. Too bloody right.
