All writers are mad scientists. You hide away from civilization, staring at screens in the darkness as you concoct strange tales. Still, if it works, if the story is good, then it's all worthwhile. Sometimes being a mad scientists pays off.

Fanfic characters never JUST catch the flu. There's a special sickfic strain for max drama: isolated characters become helpless within hours and need rescuing, characters keeping secrets blurt things out while feverish, and sometimes it's literally bioengineered by your enemies.

I'm not complaining though. I don't care if the trope is kind of ridiculous, I love it anyway 😂 Fanfic sometimes is just "screw being serious, let's have fun" and I love that for it. Just take it -> 👑

I have been Perceived.
There are two kinds of writers: the kind who triple-check every paragraph of every story to try to make sure it's exactly what they intended, and the kind who just give each one a few passes, shrug, and write 5 more stories that compensate for the failings of the first one.

This is your periodic reminder that betaing is about offering suggestions, not solutions. Allow me to repeat... Betaing = offering suggestions, not solutions. You wanna be helpful, certainly, but pls trust me that a massage tool is better than a worksite tool in this case.

I keep making the same notes reading self published work: - show me character via action, body language, speech - dont build up tension then stop to explain it - chapters need structure just like stories - every scene needs a reason: plot, character or action #WritingCommunity

thinking about the best publishing advice i ever got, which is whenever you're feeling jealous about someone else's professional success, ask yourself if you would trade the book you're writing for theirs

My blog name & Twitter handle are readystetgo to remind myself of the incredible skill of knowing when to leave the text the f*ck alone. (And yes, I've thrown out feedback that didn't work for my story.)
Have you ever resisted an editor's feedback based on your creative intentions?

When you write from your gut, it can be really hard to build awareness around your own process. One way to do this, if you wish, is to train/trick your brain into paying attention to your own language and that of your characters. 🧵 TIPS FOR GUT-WRITERS/PANTSERS 🧵

Characters are kids raiding the mansion of the (late) local evil wizard to get rid of the dangerous stuff he left behind. Melody is the town witch, protector of the valley against evil magic. Her best friend Tea spends most of his time in his parents' bakery, making magic sweets.
i always love seeing writers post those atmospheric snippets that make readers ✨feel✨ things but today, i wanna see your funniest, most ridiculous lines!
Obsessed with the way shadows from one angle are purple and shadows facing the other angle are orange. It's SO GOOD and it gives so much depth, esp with something like skin tones where it's easy for artists (cough... me) to get spooked and make the colors too flat.

Marinade: sudachi juice, sake, soy sauce, white miso, sesame oil. The sauce drizzle is hoisin, and the purple sprinkle stuff is red shiso furikake. It tastes lemony! Pro tip for cooking fish: use gentle heat to avoid those white protein clumps. If you want a sear, do that last.

Chapters are a pacing tool! Use whatever length makes your story flow smoothly and keeps your readers turning pages. Genre expectations for pacing do factor in, though. Thriller and YA, for example, are paced much faster (shorter chapters) than historical or literary fiction.

(Oh, and in case anyone needs to hear this: it's OK to put off fixing your pacing until revisions. It'll be easier with the perspective of a finished draft. Writing groups and beta readers can help, too!)
I *super* love Jenny Lawson. She has an incredible perspective on life, and also incredible perspectives on what to do if you get your arm stuck up a cow's lady garden or discover your pharmacist is eating dog treats at work. (Spoiler: write INCREDIBLY FUNNY #books about it.)
