As the 14th Global Dialogue Platform on Anticipatory Humanitarian Action concludes today in Berlin, Germany, READO is pleased to have been part of important global discussions on strengthening anticipatory action and building more resilient communities under the theme “Connecting efforts, strengthening systems, enabling scale: financing the future of anticipatory action”
Throughout the forum, discussions focused on strengthening local and national systems, mobilizing sustainable financing, improving collaboration and ensuring that communities at risk are better prepared for predictable shocks.
Our team also had valuable exchanges with colleagues from Kenya representing the @WFP_Kenya and @MalteserInt , providing an opportunity to share perspectives and reflect on the importance of collaboration in advancing anticipatory humanitarian action.
As we conclude our participation, READO remains committed to contributing to a humanitarian approach that places communities at the centre, strengthens local capacities and prioritizes acting early rather than waiting for crises to escalate.
Anticipatory action is not simply about predicting crises. It is about ensuring that communities have the resources, systems and support to act before the worst impacts are felt.

When floods disrupt schools, learning must continue.
In Afgooye, READO, in partnership with @NRC_EAY and with funding from @EduCannotWait (ECW), conducted refresher training for 83 teachers on inclusive teaching, child protection, psychosocial support, positive discipline and learning continuity during emergencies.
The training strengthened teachers’ capacity to create safer, more supportive learning environments and explored remote learning approaches to help children continue their education when flooding disrupts classrooms.
Prepared teachers mean safer children and more resilient education.

Baidoa is at a tipping point, and access is becoming part of the crisis.
Today READO publishes the Baidoa Humanitarian Advocacy Brief, drawing on our field monitoring and the latest humanitarian analysis.
✅Nearly 26,000 displaced people in Baidoa are projected to face Catastrophe (IPC Phase 5) between October and December 2026.
✅1 in 2 children screened in 14 displacement sites were acutely malnourished.
✅Repeated fighting, movement and heavy Deyr rains, driven by a strong El Niño, are cutting people off from food, water, health care and protection, even where services still exist.
Our message is clear: assistance must stay reachable as people move.
We call on donors, the UN and coordination actors, authorities and humanitarian partners to protect safe access, keep essential services running, fund flexible responses and act early on El Niño preparedness plans.

Four cycles in, 30 participants currently enrolled, and a clear question on the table: what should the next phase keep, fix and scale?
@iom_somalia recently convened the second annual learning workshop of its KOICA-supported project in Baidoa. READO, as implementing partner, sat down with Ajmal TVET Institute and @Tubsancenter to review progress, capture lessons and agree how to strengthen collaboration and future programming.
READO brought evidence from the field. The current cycle (cycle 4) enrols 30 people, 15 women and 15 men, who combine Safe Space learning, case management and vocational training at Ajmal TVET. In September alone, the project also convened a community dialogue on peace with 50 participants and a women’s football match for peace with 50 women at Rahma Stadium.
The workshop discussed what has made this work possible in a volatile context, including flexible scheduling when insecurity disrupts sessions, childcare that allows mothers to take part, and close coordination between partners.
Flood risks are already high in Baidoa, Bardaale and Hudur. In Baidoa, acute malnutrition among displaced families stands at 18.2%. This is the level of vulnerability facing communities as Southwest Somalia enters the El Niño season.
For families living in low-lying displacement sites, flooding threatens more than their shelters. It can contaminate water sources, increase the spread of disease and deepen existing food insecurity, placing already vulnerable households at even greater risk.
Having contributed to the finalization of the Southwest State El Niño Preparedness Plan, READO is now rolling out community early-warning messages in Somali and English, aligned with inter-agency guidance.
Our messages focus on practical actions households can take to protect themselves and their communities:
Stay informed: Follow official alerts from @SoDMA_Somalia and the Southwest State Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management. Share only verified information.
✅Protect drinking water: Safeguard water sources and treat water before consumption.
✅Keep drainage channels clear: Help prevent blockages that could worsen flooding.
✅Prepare for evacuation: Assemble an emergency kit and identify the nearest safe, elevated ground.
✅Look out for others: Pay particular attention to older people, children and persons with disabilities.
Preparedness is not simply about responding to a warning. It is about ensuring communities have the information and practical means to act before disaster strikes.
Acting before the water rises saves lives, protects livelihoods and reduces the cost of responding after a disaster. - with @RESCUEorg

On the International Day of the Girl Child, READO AND @iom_somalia joined the global community in celebrating the rights, potential, and achievements of every girl. We recognize that girls are essential to building peaceful, inclusive, and resilient communities. Through our commitment to social cohesion, we promote equality, inclusion, mutual respect, and peaceful coexistence, ensuring that every girl has the opportunity to participate meaningfully in community life, access essential services, and contribute to positive social change. Together, we are challenging discrimination, amplifying girls’ voices, and creating an environment where every girl feels safe, valued, and empowered to shape her future. Empowered girls build stronger communities and a more peaceful future.

Early warning today, safer learning tomorrow.
READO in partnership with @NRC_EAY, conducted El Niño flood preparedness awareness sessions for learners and teachers in Afgoi District. The messages focused on preparedness, learning continuity, safety and flood alerts, helping school communities understand the risks and take timely action.
Through local community structures, the activities aim to ensure that all children, including those with disabilities, and their parents receive accessible information to stay safe and maintain learning during potential floods.
Thanks to @EduCannotWait for the funding support.
On this World Teachers’ Day, READO stands with Somalia’s teachers—especially those teaching in crisis and emergency settings. Every day, they dedicate their time, courage, and energy, often taking great risks to ensure vulnerable children can continue learning. They are more than teachers; they are protectors of hope, builders of the future, and true heroes of education.

Social cohesion is rarely built through formal dialogue alone. It also grows in the shared, everyday spaces where people play, compete and celebrate together.
At Rahma Stadium in Baidoa, READO brought together 50 women, alongside community leaders, women representatives, youth leaders and a Member of Parliament, to promote peace, unity and social cohesion. The event took place through the ELEVATE Africa project, implemented with the @IOMSomalia and funded by the Korea International Cooperation Agency (@koica_kr).
At the centre of the day was a women's football match. It gave participants a space for teamwork, connection and community bonding, and showed in practice how sport can bring people together across differences. The winning team received a trophy, and every player received a medal.
Sport-based activities like this give women visible, positive roles in community life. They also open space for leaders and residents to meet on common ground. Alongside ELEVATE's community dialogues, they help build the everyday relationships on which peaceful coexistence in Baidoa depends.

Access to finance remains one of the biggest barriers holding back women-led businesses.
Under the e-WINS project, co-funded by the @EUinSomalia and implemented with @adra_somali , READO convened the @MinistrySws , the Chamber of Commerce, @HogaanMFI and the @mopiedsws / SOMINVEST to shape financial products designed around the needs of women entrepreneurs.
Having regulators, the private sector, a microfinance provider and investment-promotion actors in the same room matters. Products designed together are more likely to reflect both the realities of women-led businesses and the conditions that financial institutions need to lend responsibly.
As Somalia enters the 2026 Deyr season, we have developed our El Niño 2026–27 Preparedness and Response Plan to guide anticipatory action, emergency response and early recovery across our areas of operation in Baidoa, Bay, Bakool and Gedo.
Our message is simple: Act before the water rises.
The plan prioritizes early warning, community preparedness, pre-positioning of essential supplies, protection of critical services, and rapid response within 72 hours of confirmed impact. Under the central scenario, READO is preparing to reach around 150,000 people, with at least half being women and girls.
Preparedness today can save lives, protect livelihoods and help communities recover faster.

Keeping children safe and learning during floods starts before the water rises.
In Afgoi District, our education team, in partnership with @NRC_Norway and with funding from @EduCannotWait, worked with Community Education Committees, teachers and parents to identify safe routes and safe learning spaces for children ahead of possible flooding. A total of 74 community members, including 21 women, took part in the exercise, helping strengthen community preparedness and continuity of learning.
Particular attention was given to children who may face greater risks during emergencies, including children with disabilities, girls, displaced children and children from marginalised communities.
By planning early with communities, we can help protect children, reduce disruption to education and ensure safer access to learning when floods occur.
Gender equality is not built by policy alone. It is built in the everyday spaces where young people are allowed to speak, disagree and think out loud about the rights they carry including the classrooms they sit in.
Through the e-WINS project (EU Women's Innovation, Networks and Skills), we have established a Gender Equality Club at Southwest Primary and Secondary School in Baidoa.
The Club creates a structured, facilitated space for students to engage in debates, share ideas and learn about gender equality and women's rights. It sits inside the school day, not outside it, so the conversation about equality is embedded in the environment where students spend most of their formative time.
Investing in young people's understanding of gender equality and women's rights is one of the surest long-term investments an education programme can make. The girls and boys who develop the language and reasoning to speak about these rights in a Baidoa classroom today are the same young people who will carry those values into their households, workplaces and communities tomorrow.

Strengthening the quality of nutrition services in Baidoa.
READO, together with the @MoH_SWSS Southwest State of Somalia, conducted supportive supervision visits to @SwedeninSomalia and @RESCUEorg CRF-supported health facilities in Baidoa District. The visits reviewed nutrition screening, management of acute malnutrition, OTP/IMAM services, IYCF counselling, growth monitoring, commodities, referrals, reporting and staff capacity.
The exercise also provided an opportunity to engage facility teams, identify operational gaps and agree on practical actions to strengthen nutrition service delivery.
We recently convened a community dialogue in Baidoa focused on peace, inclusion and social cohesion, bringing together 50 participants — 21 women and 29 men from across the community.
Around the same table sat community elders, women, youth, persons with disabilities, former associates, the Tubsan Director for Southwest State, and a Member of the Southwest State Parliament.
The conversation centred on the issues that matter most when communities are rebuilding trust: peaceful dialogue, mutual respect, inclusion, reconciliation, and the collective responsibility we all carry in sustaining peace.
Adding a powerful cultural dimension to the gathering, a local band performed peace-themed songs, reinforcing through music the same message being shared through dialogue: lasting peace is built when communities come together, listen to one another and choose a shared path forward.
By the end of the session, one message stood out clearly: peace is not something built by a few. It requires the active participation of every member of the community.
We are grateful to @KenyaKoica and @IOMSomalia for making this engagement possible, and to every participant from community elders and youth to former associates and public leaders for choosing dialogue and for sitting together around one table.
