The Ideology Behind 9/11: 9/11 did not come out of nowhere. Al-Qaeda did not hide its motives. Years before September 11, Osama bin Laden and Ayman al-Zawahiri published declarations, issued religious rulings, named their enemies, and explained why they believed killing Americans was obligatory. In February 1998 they formed the “World Islamic Front for Jihad Against Jews and Crusaders.” And issued a fatwa, the language was not vague. They said: “The ruling to kill the Americans and their allies, civilians and military, is an individual duty for every Muslim who can do it in any country in which it is possible to do it.” That is not a conspiracy theory. That is their fatwa. Here was their logic: 1. America is in the holy land, therefore jihad is obligatory. After Saddam invaded Kuwait, U.S. forces were stationed in Saudi Arabia at the request of the Saudi government. Bin Laden didn’t care. Saudi Arabia contains Mecca and Medina. American troops there meant “Crusaders” “filthy infidels” had entered Islam’s sacred territory. He invoked the Hadith that polytheists must be expelled from the Arabian Peninsula. In his ideology the land belongs to Islam, not to a Saudi government that can invite infidels. 2. America imprisoned Muslims, therefore Muslims must fight America. Their favorite example was Omar Abdel-Rahman, the “Blind Sheikh,” convicted for a plot to bomb New York landmarks. America saw a terrorist conspirator. They saw a Muslim cleric jailed by infidels. His imprisonment became another religious grievance. They have to free him by Jihad. 3. America protects “apostate” Muslim governments, so strike America first. Al-Qaeda’s project was not just to remove U.S. soldiers. It wanted Muslim regimes overthrown and replaced with Sharia. Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and others cooperating with Washington were labeled puppets and apostates ruling by man-made law instead of God’s law. Strategy: attack the power protecting those governments. Bleed America. Drive it out. Then topple its allies. 4. America supports Israel, therefore America must be hit to “free” Palestine. They constantly invoked Palestine and Al-Aqsa. Israel is strong because America backs it. Weaken America, and Israel becomes easier to destroy. Attacking New York and Washington is jihad to “free” Palestine. 5. The map did not stop at Palestine. Al-Qaeda propaganda also treated Al-Andalus, Muslim-ruled Spain centuries ago, as lost Islamic land. “Occupation,” in their worldview, is not only a modern army on the ground. Territory can remain “Islamic” in their eyes long after Muslims lost it. And who stood at the head of the Western order protecting Europe? America. So America became the primary target. Then came the justification for murdering civilians. Even if you accepted their foreign-policy grievances, how do you justify slaughtering office workers, passengers, firefighters, secretaries, cooks, and janitors? They had an answer. Bin Laden argued American civilians were not innocent because they elect their government, pay taxes that fund it, and supply its military. A secretary in Manhattan could be held responsible for U.S. policy. A passenger could be a legitimate target because he paid taxes. A civilian could be killed because she participated in democracy. Once you see all Americans as enemies of Allah, mass murder becomes easy to rationalize. That is how they justified 9/11. Not mystery. Not random hatred of skyscrapers. Then, on September 11, 2001, they acted on that ideology and murdered nearly 3,000 people. You can condemn the terrorists all day. If you refuse to examine the ideology they themselves invoked, you have explained nothing. 9/11 had perpetrators. It had objectives. It had an ideology. Ignoring that ideology is not tolerance. It is a refusal to confront what Al-Qaeda actually said, and what many Muslims believe.
