When I entered surgical residency in 1963, sixty-three years ago, the end of surgery by surgeons was being predicted (see: Star Trek). The more Elon Musk expands his (and our) vision, the more highly sophisticated engineers he needs....we must ensure, as we always have, that the next generation of surgeons is even more sophisticated: if I wasn"t rapidly approaching my 90th year, I would try for a year of Fellowship with Elon Musk's Neuralink. Biomedical engineers have already achieved prominence bridging into medical fields. We should welcome and adopt breakthrough technology. Surgeons who were not quick enough to pick up new frontiers were inevitably superseded by medical interventionists (radiology, neurology, anesthesia, cardiology) who were skilled in placing miniaturized devices through arteries. Dr (insert Surgeon's name here) ,we would be honored if you would join our international LinkedIn Group, Surgeons Community: linkedin.com/groups/15694054… tidd.ly/4q6kGqF Just Published: Care of the Older Adult (Springer) tidd.ly/4w0m7bJ Strategy: German rmcpublishingllc.com routledge.com/The-Care-of-th… Strategy: English Ronald M Caplan MD, Clin Assoc Prof Emeritus Weill Cornell Medical College

Lost for Half a Century....Miracles in Modern Medicine at Meditheatre, Expo67, seen on location at Meditheatre by 2.5 million people in 1967. Ghost Artist has excerpts that show state of the art obstetrics, neurosurgery and dialysis (with people smoking!) sixty years ago, along with colorful descriptions of the 1960's artistic scene in New York, Montreal and Paris.vimeo.com/390530187/f6673a8d… . Directed by Steven Palmer and Edward Riche, the film unmasks the artistic life and legacy of an elusive creator who worked with a seemingly endless list of legendary artists like Andy Warhol and James Baldwin.  The point of departure is the discovery of a lost film about medicine, originally prepared for Expo 67 where it became notorious for making thousands faint.Ghost Artist is a Canadian documentary that had its world premiere at the 2019 FIN Atlantic International Film Festival. rmcpublishingllc.com

Surgeons Community: LinkedIn An interested surgeon asked "why": my reply: Thanks for your interest. The initial impetus for starting this LinkedIn Group was the discontinuance of the Surgeons Communities of the American College of Surgeons due to lack of interest some six months ago. While setting it up, I decided that the insularity of the various specialties should be addressed by creating one group only, so that a dialogue could ensue across the spectrum of surgeons. I brought back in prominent Fellows of ACOG , which was one of the first groups to split off  from ACS, along with prominent members of your specialty and others. I made it international to widen the conversation, and I am encouraging residents to join, and even some surgically interested medical students in order to hopefully achieve long term group survival. As well, I have started to include interventionists in cardiology and other traditionally medical specialties (anesthesia, neurology) who, because of their interest, innovation, and skills in introducing devices etc through the arterial system. have been usurping a significant amount of traditionally surgical territory. You might want to start by simply joining LinkedIn and then joining with me on LinkedIn (one billion plus people).   where I have 22.300 plus contacts, and follow my messaging there. if you so wish. i would welcome your comments on our latest Springer textbook, Care of the Older Adult, which you could easily have your university librarian obtain for you: link.springer.com/book/97830… Best, Ron

Final Edit: Care of the Older Adult: a Clinical Casebook link.springer.com/book/97830… Only fitting that, right in the midst of it, we got hit with a microburst that toppled powerlines and took down swaths of mighty oaks. No injuries, thankfully. No internet. Finished the edit on my trusty IPhone. Enjoy the book: packed with information/insights, new directions, and good old fashioned diagnosis aided by state of the art technique.

The Recipe... for the Synthetic Human Genome For the last ten years , there has been talk of assembling a fully synthetic human genome (genetic instructions encoded in DNA: the blueprint for building the human body) via DNA synthesis. There are roughly three billion bases in the human genome, of which 2% are known to encode genes. Some of the rest may be involved in gene regulation and gene structure. A vast number have no known function, and therefore have sometimes been considered dispensable. There is no known medical, scientific need for assembling a fully synthetic human genome at present, although there is much use for assemblages of artificial DNA in, say, new drug testing. In the future, considering the vast distances and time required for interplanetary travel, sending The Recipe, possibly along with a first generation of actual humans, may well be considered. A few generations ago, one of the times during which I was actively practicing medicine, various body organs, for example, tonsils, were considered to be of no known value, or to be of no known value past, say, adolescence, for example, the thymus gland. There is some thought being given to creating a stripped down version of a synthetic human genome, without the nonfunctioning (that is, we have no knowledge of their function) "dispensable"components. The consequences of that construction have to be considered. nature.com/articles/d41586-0… link.springer.com/book/97830… rmcpublishingllc.com

"Normal"Aging I have largely eliminated 'normal' before aging in this new book. Many of the characteristics that we traditionally associated with aging, including frailty, dimunition of function, onset of disease processes and cognition issues are fervently being worked on by research scientists, down to the cellular level, in conjunction with physicians and other medical professionals. Epigenetic age is increasingly being recognized, with even newer measurements of age being sought. link.springer.com/book/97830…
