WHO comments on United States announcement of intent to withdraw
Geneva – The World Health Organization regrets the announcement that the United States of America intends to withdraw from the Organization.
WHO plays a crucial role in protecting the health and security of the world’s people, including Americans, by addressing the root causes of disease, building stronger health systems, and detecting, preventing and responding to health emergencies, including disease outbreaks, often in dangerous places where others cannot go.
The United States was a founding member of WHO in 1948 and has participated in shaping and governing WHO’s work ever since, alongside 193 other Member States, including through its active participation in the World Health Assembly and Executive Board. For over seven decades, WHO and the USA have saved countless lives and protected Americans and all people from health threats. Together, we ended smallpox, and together we have brought polio to the brink of eradication. American institutions have contributed to and benefited from membership in WHO.
With the participation of the United States and other Member States, WHO has over the past 7 years implemented the largest set of reforms in its history, to transform our accountability, cost-effectiveness, and impact in countries. This work continues.
We hope the United States will reconsider and we look forward to engaging in constructive dialogue to maintain the partnership between the USA and WHO, for the benefit of the health and well-being of millions of people around the globe.

Over 560,000 children aged below ten years of age were vaccinated against #polio during the first round of an emergency vaccination campaign in #Gaza, which was completed yesterday.
We admire all the health teams, who conducted this complex operation.
We are deeply grateful to the families, for their trust and cooperation.
This is a massive success amidst a tragic daily reality of life across the Gaza Strip.
Imagine what could be achieved with a ceasefire!

Indeed, terribly tragic. No words can reflect the true horror and loss of life in #Gaza.
Hospitals, schools and shelters have been repeatedly bombarded, resulting in deaths of civilians and humanitarians.
Our hearts go out to @UNRWA colleagues. We grieve the loss of another six colleagues.
The carnage in Gaza must stop. Ceasefire!
Just Tragic.
#Gaza
Six @UNRWA colleagues killed today when two airstrikes hit a school and its surroundings in Nuseirat in the middle areas.
This is the highest death toll among our staff in a single incident.
Among those killed was the manager of the UNRWA shelter and other team members providing assistance to displaced people.
Sincere condolences to their families and loved ones.
This school has been hit five times since the war began.
It is home to around 12,000 displaced people, mainly women and children.
No one is safe in Gaza
No one is spared.
Schools and other civilian infrastructure must be protected at all times, they are not a target.
We call on all parties to the conflict to never use schools or the areas around them for military or fighting purposes.
#CeasefireNOW

The #polio vaccination teams must be protected and allowed to conduct the upcoming campaigns in #Gaza safely. We urge all parties to ensure their protection, and that of health facilities and children.
Humanitarian pauses are welcome, but ultimately, the only solution to safeguard the health of the children of Gaza is a ceasefire.
