America's history is, in part, a "history of immigration," says sociologist Nancy Foner.
That history includes "people coming here to make a better life for themselves and their families, in some cases to flee persecution, so that immigration is really in the lifeblood of America," she told PBS News' @JudyWoodruff.
Foner, the author of "Immigration: How the Past Shapes the Present," added that every time the United States has had large waves of immigration, there's also been a "negative reaction among some parts of the population."
Foner joined Woodruff for her series, Crossroads: America at 250. For more: to.pbs.org/3VAiXit

Ukraine just blew up a Russian data center that caused a big drop in Russian propaganda bots, so Fox News has to make up the difference.

Letβs lead with the facts: there is no evidence of widespread non-citizen voting.Β
But Trump is still trying to exercise control over elections through two clearly unconstitutional Executive Orders.Β
CREWβs Senior Litigation Counsel John Hill lays it all out in his testimony.

@hinsonashley @millermeeks and @NunnForCongress SAY they support a Congressional stock ban, but are silent when Trump loads up on stocks.
Hypocrites and liars. Every last one.
President Trump made purchases between $1 million and $5 million each in Microsoft, McDonaldβs and Comcast stock in August.

My sister's longtime dentist practice got bought out by a private equity-backed dental group four months ago.
Same office. Same hygienists. Same chairs. Zero new equipment.
Last week they sent the new fee schedule for anyone with insurance.
A routine cleaning that used to run $120 is now billed at $310, with the group quietly dropping several insurance plans they used to accept.
When patients asked why, the new regional manager gave a scripted line about "aligning with market standards."
Private equity figured out the same trick everywhere.
They're buying up the things you can't opt out of: dental, veterinary care, urgent care, hospice, because they know you can't just skip your kid's cavity or your dog's surgery.
This isn't inflation. It's leveraged debt getting loaded onto places you have no choice but to keep paying.

trump, vance, and Hegseth have never been friends of veterans.
A new VA report has a shocking revelation: more than half of all VA medical centers are now reporting severe staffing shortages. 97% of facilities can't fully staff their doctors, and 58% can't hire enough psychologists.
This didn't happen in a vacuum. The Trump administration has cut roughly 30,000 VA jobs. Now, Veterans are paying the price. @RepVindman

Americans are relearning the lesson we learned during the Gilded Age of the late 1890s, when robber barons ran the government and the economy for their own benefit: Oligarchy is incompatible with the common good.
I'm hopeful we'll respond with a new progressive movement.
