Nothing captures Brexit quite like people celebrating the end of something they hadn’t fully understood in the first place.

After the Brexit referendum in 2016, Nigel Farage predicted that the Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden, Austria and Italy would also leave. The data tells a very different story. Here’s how favourability towards the EU changed from 2016 to 2025: 🇳🇱 Netherlands - from 72% to 81% 🇩🇰 Denmark - from 62% to 85% 🇸🇪 Sweden - from 64% to 85% 🇦🇹 Austria - 37% to 51% 🇮🇹 Italy - 33% to 52% Each of the countries Farage identified in 2016 has instead become more pro European Union. And as of October 2026, 10 countries are in the EU enlargement process: 🇦🇱Albania, 🇧🇦Bosnia and Herzegovina, 🇬🇪Georgia, 🇽🇰Kosovo, 🇲🇩Moldova, 🇲🇪Montenegro, 🇲🇵North Macedonia, 🇷🇸Serbia, 🇹🇷Türkiye and 🇺🇦Ukraine. My view: After Andy Burnham's speech on the possibility of the UK rejoing the EU, Brexiters are having a meltdown claiming membership costs too much, we are better off outside the EU, etc. The simple questions to ask is why, if these are genuine concerns, haven't the five countries Farage identified ten years ago as leaving, left? And why are 10 more countries trying to get closer to the EU? Could it be that all of these countries understand the value of closer ties between nations, the value of freedom of movement, of a single currency, or unfettered trade enriching everyone in the club, and that the benefit of being in the club far outweigh the membership fees? Brexit was sold as the answer to problems Britain had been struggling with for years: pressure on the NHS, a shortage of affordable housing, declining public services and communities that felt neglected. Immigration was often blamed. But many of those problems were the result of government policy: years of austerity, cuts to councils, too few council homes, weak infrastructure investment, the erosion of NHS dentistry and repeated failures to expand services alongside population growth. The frustrations were real. The diagnosis was often wrong. Leaving the EU did not fix those problems. It added trade barriers and economic costs. The OBR continues to estimate that Brexit will leave UK long-run productivity around 4% lower than it otherwise would have been. That matters because stronger growth means a larger tax base and more money available for housing, healthcare, councils, transport and public services. Rejoining the EU would not magically repair Britain, but closer economic integration would remove barriers and strengthen the economy. We would still need better government choices — but we would have more resources with which to make them. The problems that helped cause Brexit were largely problems of domestic policy. Blaming immigrants distracted from that. Fixing them means reversing the bad policy choices that created them in the first place. Btw that's Nathan Gill standing behind Nigel Farage. Long-time friend of Farage who is now sitting in jail for pushing narratives favourable to Russia over Ukraine while questioning Ukraine’s democratic credentials and suitability for closer EU integration.

Who did this? Braverman, Jenrick, Kruger or maybe your dumb Brexit. Although boat crossings are down by 48% & overall migration is the lowest for years under Labour.

I don't know what Associate Membership of the European Union is but I'm super excited for Canada 🇨🇦🇪🇺🥳 Then I remember how every PM since Cameron: May, Johnson, Truss, Sunak, Starmer, all of them exploited Brexit to become PM. They put their careers ahead of the nation. Sad.

I reread this every year. I cry like a baby every year. Todd Beamer died a father, husband, and hero. Todd: Hello… Operator… listen to me. I can’t speak very loud. This is an emergency. I’m a passenger on a United flight to San Francisco. Our plane has been hijacked. Lisa: I understand. Can they see you? Todd: No. There are three that we know of. They have knives — razor knives, like box cutters. Someone announced from the cockpit there was a bomb. It sounded fake. Lisa: Your name?Todd: Todd Beamer. United Flight 93.Todd: They killed one passenger in first class. They forced most of us back. Fourteen of us here. Five flight attendants. The guy with the bomb ordered us to sit on the floor. Lisa: Are you okay? Todd: We’re going down… wait. No. We’re leveling off. We changed directions. We’re flying east again. Todd: A guy named Jeremy called his wife. She told him two planes hit the World Trade Center. Lisa, is that true? Lisa: I have to tell you the truth. It’s very bad. Both towers are gone. A third plane hit the Pentagon. Our country is under attack. I’m afraid your plane may be part of their plan. Todd: Oh God. Lisa, will you do something for me? Call my wife and my kids. Promise me you’ll call. Lisa: I promise. Todd: Our home number is… You have the same name as my wife. Lisa. We’ve been married ten years. She’s pregnant with our third child. Tell her I love her. I’ll always love her. We have two boys — David, he’s 3, and Andrew, he’s 1. Tell them their daddy loves them and he is so proud of them. The baby is due January 12th. I saw an ultrasound. We still don’t know if it’s a girl or a boy. Lisa: I’ll tell them. I promise, Todd.(Lisa patches in the FBI.) Agent: Todd, your plane is on a course for Washington. Best guess is the White House or the Capitol. Todd: I understand. I’ll be back. Todd: Everyone knows this isn’t a normal hijacking. We have decided we will not be pawns in their plot. Lisa: What are you going to do? Todd: Four of us are going to rush the one with the bomb. Then the cockpit. A stewardess is getting boiling water. We’ll take them out. Todd: Would you pray with me?They pray the Lord’s Prayer. Then: Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for thou art with me. Todd: God help me. Jesus help me.Are you guys ready? Let’s Roll.

#PGMOL are a disgrace
20 years ago today Mike Riley ended #Arsenal's Invincibles run on the 50th game with this shambolic performance. Incredibly, after a horrific refereeing career, he was placed in charge of the PGMOL from 2009-2023. There is never any accountability. #AFC

According to Nigel Farage, Iceland being in the EU Single Market, having free movement of people and belonging to Schengen is perfectly compatible with national independence. I look forward to him endorsing the same independence for the UK: back in the Single Market, with free movement and Schengen.

🇺🇸🇺🇸🧐🤔“AND YOU STILL DARE TO OPEN YOUR MOUTH…” Sasha Legerman: This is too accurate not to share. This Australian’s response to Trump’s rant that “NATO does nothing for America” is absolutely devastating: “Mate. You run a country where 600,000 homeless people will sleep on the streets tonight. A country where 40% of adults can’t cover a $400 emergency without borrowing money. A country where insulin costs more than a car payment, and people ration it just to stay alive. A country where medical debt is the number one cause of bankruptcy. A country where women die in hospital parking lots because doctors are too afraid of abortion laws to treat miscarriages. You imprison more of your own citizens than any country on Earth. More than China. More than Russia. More than North Korea. In the land of the free, 2 million people sit in cages, and a quarter of them haven’t even been convicted of anything. They’re simply too poor to afford bail. Your life expectancy is declining. You’re the only developed nation where that’s happening. Your infant mortality rate is worse than Cuba’s. Your children practice active shooter drills between math and English classes while you sell defense stocks to your friends. Your minimum wage hasn’t changed in 15 years. Your teachers work two jobs, your veterans sleep under bridges, and you just spent a trillion dollars flattening a country that never attacked you. And now a convicted criminal — found liable for sexual abuse, defending a pedophile, sleeping with a porn star, and running the biggest dumpster-fire campaign since the Taliban — is thanking you for yet another disaster. And you call Greenland badly governed? Greenland has universal healthcare. Free education. One of the lowest incarceration rates in the world. Nobody there goes bankrupt because they got sick. Nobody dies in a waiting room because insurance refused treatment. ‘NATO wasn’t there when we needed them.’ When exactly was that, champ? September 11? Because NATO invoked Article 5 for the first and only time in history FOR YOU. Soldiers from dozens of countries deployed, fought, bled, and died in Afghanistan FOR YOU. Australia wasn’t even in NATO, and we still showed up. For twenty years. And then you left at 2 a.m. without telling anyone and left everybody else to clean up the mess. You don’t care that a great nation is being terrorized by your friend, and you haven’t shown it a single ounce of sympathy. So maybe before calling other countries badly governed, take a look at your own backyard, you aluminum siding salesman with a spray tan. The only thing badly managed in this picture is your damn mouth. And you still dare to lecture the rest of the world?”
